By Aishat Momoh. O.
Grammy-nominated Afrobeat sensation Ayra Starr has become the first Nigerian female artiste to surpass one billion total views on YouTube, marking a major milestone in her rapidly rising global music career.
The 22-year-old Mavin Records star, widely known as the “Sabi Girl,” announced the achievement via her Instagram fan page on Monday. The feat is largely credited to the massive success of her hit single “Rush,” which alone has racked up over 458 million views, catapulting her into the ranks of Nigeria’s most streamed artists.
With this landmark, Ayra Starr joins the exclusive club of Nigerian music heavyweights who have crossed the one-billion-view threshold on YouTube, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Rema, Omah Lay, Kizz Daniel, Tekno, P-Square, Flavour, and Fireboy.
Since her debut in 2021, Ayra Starr has rapidly gained both local and international acclaim, becoming one of the most followed African artistes on Spotify with over 4.8 million followers. Her single “Rush” has earned her global recognition, including a Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammy Awards.
In addition to its staggering YouTube performance, “Rush” has earned multiple international certifications, including Platinum status in the United Kingdom for surpassing 600,000 units in sales and streams, Diamond Certification in France, Platinum in Canada and New Zealand, and triple Platinum status in Nigeria.
The chart-topping track also marked Ayra Starr’s debut on the UK Official Top 100, solidifying her position as one of Africa’s most promising music exports.
As her influence continues to grow, Ayra Starr’s latest milestone not only celebrates her personal achievement but also marks a significant moment for female representation in the Nigerian and African music scenes.
