WAEC: STUDENTS NARROWLY ESCAPE DEATH AS SCHOOL BUILDING COLLAPSES IN TARABA
By: Motunrayo Aniwura
On Wednesday night, a classroom building at Government Secondary School in Namnai village, Gassol Local Government Area, collapsed due to strong winds and heavy rainfall, narrowly sparing hundreds of secondary school students who were taking their final year West African Senior School Certificate Examination, or WASSCE.
The second group of students had just started their tests when the event happened, which was around 6 p.m.
The abrupt storm, according to witnesses, caused the classrooms to collapse, trapping students, instructors, NYSC corps members, and test supervisors inside.
“Many victims, both male and female students, sustained serious injuries, including fractures,” said Alhaji DanAzumi Lauris, a resident of Namnai.
“Teachers, exam supervisors, and corps members were also trapped under the rubble but were rescued after several hours by local residents.”
To receive treatment, the injured were taken to a primary healthcare facility nearby. Lauris added that the storm had destroyed the school building as well as a number of homes in the community.

Relatedly, the intense rain caused problems for WASSCE exams in the state capital of Jalingo, where floods and low visibility made it impossible for many pupils to get home until after one in the morning.
Regarding the amount of the damage and whether the examination timetable would be changed, authorities have not yet released an official comment as of this report.
