By: Motunrayo Aniwura
A mysterious illness has reportedly affected Mbutu Community in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, resulting in the deaths of about six pupils and prompting local authorities to close all public and private schools for a week.
The community, which includes four autonomous towns—Mbutu Ancient Kingdom, Mbutu Nweorie, Mbutu Ukwu, and Nwenkwo—is now gripped by fear as the disease continues to spread.
Iheukwumere Henry Alaribe, the LGA Chairman, told reporters that the school closure aims to prevent further transmission and protect children’s lives.
He noted that six children aged between one and six have died within a span of less than seven days.
In a press release, the chairman added that the World Health Organization (WHO), the State Ministry of Health’s Department of Disease Prevention and Control, and council health workers are actively investigating the outbreak.
He said plans were underway to collaborate with the state government and relevant agencies to contain the outbreak and ensure the well-being of citizens.
“In light of this outbreak, parents who have not yet vaccinated their children are strongly advised to do so,
”Vaccinations are essential for preventing the spread of disease and protecting our children’s health,” the statement said.
Alaribe urged the people of the area to remain calm and cooperate with the relevant authorities as efforts by the medical authorities were working to curtail the outbreak.
