Kannywood to embark on campaign against exploitation of almajiri
The Neem Foundation is mobilizing members of the Kannywood industry to take up campaign against exploitation of almajiri through films and documentaries.
The artistes are expected to come up with movies that will depict the almajiri’s way of life, particularly how he is being exploited and how the system could be reformed.
A Senior Programme Officer of the Neem Foundation, Ashraf Usman, disclosed this at the Kannywood sensitization meeting organized by the foundation.
Usman said the aim of the collaboration with the film industry was to raise public awareness on the deterioration of the almajiri system in the country.
“The unstructured management of the system has left majority of the almajiri pupils vulnerable to different types of abuses and exploitations including physical, emotional, sexual as well as psychological distress, which overtime increase the vulnerability of these children to radicalization as well as other social ills.”
He added that they were seeking the support of the industry so that they could tell stories that depict the degeneration of the almajiri system through the artistry way.
Responding on behalf of the Kannywood, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MOPPAN) Abdulkareem Muhammad, said the industry would give its full support to the initiative.
