Despite a shaky start, Djokovic broke for a 3-1 lead, making it look like a ‘mission impossible’ for the 25-year-old from Rome.

On Centre Court, Djokovic defeated Italian seventh seed Matteo Berrettini 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-4 6-3 to become the first player since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the first three championships of the year, keeping him on pace to follow in the footsteps of the Australian and win a calendar Grand Slam.

“That was more than just a fight. Matteo, congratulations on a wonderful tournament. Today’s contest was a difficult one. He’s an authentic Italian hammer “Djokovic stated.

“As a child, winning Wimbledon was always my greatest ambition. I have to keep in mind how wonderful this is and not take it for granted. I have to remember that this is a tremendous honor and privilege.

“From creating a Wimbledon trophy out of raw materials as a seven-year-old to standing here with a sixth prize. It’s fantastic.”

On competing on an equal footing with Nadal and Federer, he added: “It implies that none of us three will be able to stop!

“I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Rafa and Roger. They are our sport’s legends. The two most crucial opponents I’ve ever encountered.

“They are the reason I am in the position I am now. They helped me realize what I needed to do in order to improve. The previous ten years have been an extraordinary experience that shows no signs of coming to an end.”
