Steven Gerrard wants Aston Villa to compete in European club competitions once more, and he has debunked any speculation about his previous club Liverpool by claiming that his new position is not a “stepping stone” to managing at Anfield.

In his first press conference as Villa manager, ahead of the club’s match against Brighton on Saturday, the former Rangers boss described the job as an “honour” and claimed he is “very proud” to be a Premier League head coach.

His first goal will be to turn around the club’s poor form, which saw Dean Smith, now the head coach of Norwich City, sacked following five successive defeats that left Villa two points above the relegation zone.

According to Gerrard, “In terms of Liverpool, I don’t believe this press conference should be about any other team other than Aston Villa, and I believe we must respect our fans.

“I believe that everyone understands how much Liverpool means to me, but my focus is on Aston Villa. I’ve stated that I’m all-in, and I can assure our supporters that I am.

“I think first and foremost it’s an extremely proud moment from a personal point of you, it’s a real honour to be the manager of this football club.”
