Stephen Curry, of the Golden State Warriors, has long been a fan of LeBron James, but in anticipation of Friday’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Lakers, he added another layer of appreciation to his famous foe’s praises.

Curry, who played James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals for four straight years from 2015 to 2018, acknowledged the greatness he has seen from James for a long time when asked what it’s been like to play against him for so many years at such a high level.

“He set the standard for that,” Curry said after Friday’s shootaround, while discussing James’ ability to extend his prime. “Let’s keep it real — what is he, in his 18th year? Nine straight Finals, all the things that he’s accomplished. You have a vision of sustaining your prime for as long as you can, kind of reimaging what that looks like. So you know the work that goes into it, the intentionality, especially in the off-seasons, especially how you take care of your body, your mind. Balance on-court, off-court.”

The two-time Most Valuable Player, 33, began to reflect on how long James had been a part of his basketball life. In 2008, James, who will be 37 in December, started attending Curry’s games while still a player at Davidson College.

Curry explained, “It’s a strange perspective for me because I still remember my college days and he was just going into his prime in the NBA.” “He came to a game my sophomore year during the [NCAA] Tournament run, and he came to a game my junior year. This is just hilarious. In my parents’ house in Charlotte, I still have a jersey that he signed in 2008. So it’s kind of strange to consider what has happened in the last 13, 14 years.”

When asked how many times he’s been asked a question about four-time MVP LeBron James over the years, Curry couldn’t help but laugh.

“Can anyone tell me what the number is?” Curry remarked. “But that’s usually a positive thing because it indicates you’ve been to nine Finals in a row, so maybe he’ll be asking you questions about your team or vice versa, right?”
