The United States men’s basketball team was defeated by Nigeria in its first exhibition game before the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday evening. It was a surprising result even if the ramifications are more symbolic than likely to impact the US’s final gold medal aspirations.

The Americans had a 54-2 record in exhibition games since professional basketball began in 1992, and they had just nine years before defeating Nigeria by 83 points in the London Olympics. In an exhibition five years ago, Team USA defeated Nigeria by 43 points.

Nigeria beat a Team USA team loaded with All-NBA players, 90-87 At Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas. It was the first time an African squad has defeated the United States men’s national team.

Nigeria boasts seven NBA players, and their quality was on display, especially in terms of tough defense and 3-point shooting. However, despite starting five All-NBA players, the Americans were unable to produce against a squad that appeared to play more collectively, which is a frequent problem in international competition.

Team USA now has a 54-3 record in exhibition games going all the way back to 1992.

Nigeria hit 20 of 42 3-pointers and racked up 21 assists while passing its way through Team USA rotations. Gabe Vincent, who plays for the Miami Heat and is known as Gabe Nnamdi when representing Nigeria, ended with 21 points on 6-of-8 3-point shooting. Caleb Agada, who now plays in the Israeli league and will shortly join the Denver Nuggets in summer league, scored 17 points off the bench.

“It was an exhibition,” Nigeria coach Mike Brown, a current Golden State Warriors assistant, said. “At the end of the day, it doesn’t mean anything in the rankings. However, it is a nice victory for us. I don’t believe any African team has ever beaten the United States of America in basketball.”
