Crocodiles are one of the fiercest hunters in the animal kingdom, but it’s not uncommon to see someone sitting on one in a small village in Burkina Faso.

More than 100 razor-toothed critters cohabit the pond of people in Bazoule, some 30 kilometers from the city Ouagadougou.

The surprising association with the predators, according to local folklore, dates back to at least the 15th century.

The villagers were suffering from a severe drought until the crocodiles brought them to a hidden pond where they could quench their thirst. This made the people throw a feast to honor and celebrate the reptiles.

Every year, villagers make sacrifices and ask the animals to grant their wishes of health, prosperity, and a successful harvest, a festival known as Koom Lakre.

The crocodiles, far from being a menace, are thought to have a mystical relationship with Bazoule.

Villagers have gotten so used to the crocodiles since they were young, swimming in the water with them. this created a bond between them as they can always approach the reptiles and sit or even lie on them.

However, the villagers see the reptiles as sacred, they don’t do anything to anyone. It is believed that their ancestors’ souls are symbolized by crocodiles, that is why if one dies, it is buried like a human.

Also, they cry out when a misfortune is about to strike the village. The elders are in responsible of deciphering the screams and making wishes to ward off bad luck.
