BREAKING: IFAB TO MAKE FIVE-SUBSTITUTION PERMANENT IN PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUES

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has suggested that the five-substitution rule should be made permanent in professional football Leagues. 

In May 2020, the interim rule was implemented in reaction to the COVID-19 epidemic, in order to support player welfare in light of the packed fixture schedule.

The organization agreed to extended the rule until December 2022 back in May. However, as a result of current exhaustion concerns among players, has urged that the rule be made permanent.

It will be up to the competition organizers to decide whether or not teams can use the regulation.

All European Leagues implemented the rule after the 2019-2020 season was extended into July and August and all Leagues continued to do so for the 2020-21 season except the English Premier League, EFL and SPFL in England, as they opted to return back to a maximum of three substitutes. However, it was applied in League cups.
