Mrs Johnson Wahl studied English at Oxford University and is the daughter of barrister Sir James Fawcett, who served as president of the European Commission for Human Rights in the 1970s.

She took a break from her studies to go to America with Stanley Johnson, whom she married in 1963, before returning to Lady Margaret Hall to finish her degree as the first married female undergraduate.

Before divorcing in 1979, the couple had four children: Boris, journalist Rachel, former minister Jo, and environmentalist Leo.

She refused to accept any money from her ex-husband in the years after their divorce, instead making a life selling paintings. She then admitted to being “extremely hard up.”

She married American professor Nicholas Wahl in 1988 and moved to New York, where she began painting cityscapes, which were the focus of a sell-out exhibition in 2004. However, after his death in 1996, she returned to London.
