The Ondo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a 100-level student of the Federal University of Technology Akure, Favour Olaniyi, who was found dead near his off-campus residence in Akure.

Olaniyi, a student of the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, was reportedly discovered lifeless inside a bush close to the university’s North Gate on Saturday.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, although police said a bottle suspected to contain a poisonous substance was recovered at the scene, raising suspicion of possible suicide.

Confirming the development in a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Abayomi Jimoh, said detectives had already launched an investigation into the case.

According to the statement, officers who visited the scene observed no visible marks of violence on the deceased’s body.

Jimoh added that the corpse had been deposited at the morgue for preservation and further examination while investigations continue to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the death.

Reacting to the incident, the university described the student’s death as “sad and unfortunate.”

In a statement issued by the institution’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Adegbenro Adebanjo, the university disclosed that its security personnel promptly alerted the police after receiving reports about the incident.

The institution stated that police officers, medical officials, and university security personnel coordinated efforts to evacuate the body to the morgue.

The university also confirmed that the deceased’s parents had been informed and assured that the institution was fully cooperating with security agencies investigating the matter.

According to the statement, counselling support is also being provided to some of the deceased’s classmates affected by the tragic incident.

The university extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, stating that its thoughts and prayers remain with them during the difficult period.

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged vandalisation and theft of electrical installations at the General Hospital, Igbotako, in Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Akure.

According to the statement, the incident was reported on May 6, 2026, by a concerned resident who alleged that a suspect identified as Promise Godspower unlawfully gained access to the hospital premises, vandalised electrical installations, and stole electrical cables.

Jimoh said police operatives acted promptly on credible intelligence and investigative leads, leading to the arrest of the prime suspect.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the offence.

The police spokesperson added that a security personnel attached to the hospital, Pogbara Sigalo, was also taken into custody for questioning over alleged negligence of duty and possible complicity in the incident.

According to the police, the stolen electrical cables were recovered from the suspect, while investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Adebowale Lawal, condemned both the alleged vandalism and the reported security breach.

The police commissioner described negligence of duty as a serious threat to public safety and the protection of government facilities and infrastructure.

Lawal also warned against acts of vandalism, theft, and destruction of public property, stressing that anyone found culpable after investigations would face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Troops of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have neutralised a suspected terrorist during a coordinated ambush operation in the Adankolo Forest Reserve area of Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State.

The operation, carried out by troops under Operation TIGER PAW II, followed credible intelligence on the movement of suspected terrorists within the forest and adjoining communities.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 12 Brigade Nigerian Army, Hassan Abdullahi.

According to the statement, troops from the 12 Brigade Quick Response Group laid an ambush at a suspected crossing point in the early hours of Sunday, May 10, 2026.

The soldiers reportedly engaged the suspects in a gun battle after making contact with them, resulting in the death of one suspected terrorist, while others escaped with gunshot wounds into the surrounding bush.

The Army said several weapons and items were recovered during the operation, including two AK-47 rifles, one locally fabricated pistol, six magazines, and 145 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

Other recovered items included a camouflage bandolier, a Honda motorcycle, Diclofenac medication, three mobile phones, three power banks, and a cash sum of N62,900.

The military noted that the operation forms part of sustained efforts by the 12 Brigade to deny criminal elements freedom of movement and strengthen security across Kogi State and neighbouring areas.

The statement added that troops are currently combing the forest and surrounding communities in pursuit of the fleeing suspects.

The latest operation comes amid intensified military offensives against terrorists and armed groups across parts of the country.

On Saturday, troops of Operation HADIN KAI reportedly neutralised scores of suspected ISWAP terrorists during a coordinated attack on the Headquarters of the 27 Brigade in Buni Gari, Yobe State.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled an attempted attack by suspected ISWAP terrorists on the 120 Task Force Battalion in Gonori, Borno State, inflicting heavy casualties on the insurgents during a coordinated air-land operation.

The failed assault occurred late Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday, according to military authorities.

The terrorists were said to have advanced towards the military formation from the Mandunari axis at about midnight but were detected early by an ambush team positioned around the area.

Military sources disclosed that troops swiftly launched a coordinated spoiling attack, trapping the insurgents in what was described as a devastating killing zone.

The military confirmed that the terrorists were unable to breach the camp, while no equipment was lost during the confrontation.

Air platforms from the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI and the Nigerian Army Aviation were subsequently deployed in support of ground troops, carrying out precision strikes on the retreating insurgents.

The synchronized air and ground assault reportedly resulted in massive losses for the terrorists and forced the surviving fighters to flee.

Following the operation, exploitation of the surrounding area revealed extensive blood trails, body parts, and several terrorist corpses, indicating significant enemy casualties.

Troops also recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition from the scene, including one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), two PKT machine guns, five AK-47 rifles, and several belts of assorted ammunition, alongside other personal effects.

The military added that soldiers injured during the encounter are in stable condition and currently receiving medical attention.

Exploitation and pursuit operations are ongoing in the general area to track down fleeing insurgents and consolidate on the gains recorded during the operation.

Operation HADIN KAI stated that the latest failed attack further demonstrates the operational dominance of troops in the North-East theatre and the determination of the Armed Forces to sustain pressure on terrorist groups operating in the region.

The Nigeria Customs Service has given back several stolen luxury cars that were traced back to Canada.
These vehicles were found at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos and were intercepted by customs officials. Officials called this a big success in the fight against groups that steal cars across borders.

The cars, which are from high–end brands like Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, and Mercedes-Benz, were officially handed over to Canadian officials during a ceremony at the Tin Can Island Port on Monday, May 4, 2026.

The Deputy High Commissioner of Canada in Nigeria, Nasser Salihou, received the vehicles from Comptroller Frank Onyeka, who is in charge of the Tin Can Island Command.

A statement from the National Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Abdullahi Maiwada, said the operation was the result of several months of sharing information between Nigerian authorities and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

According to the statement, Canadian authorities traced several luxury vehicles stolen in Canada and illegally exported through international shipping networks before they eventually surfaced in Nigeria.

Internal Customs documents dated May 5, 2026, showed that the intercepted vehicles included a 2019 Lexus RX350, a 2019 Mercedes-Benz G550, a 2023 Land Rover Range Rover, a 2019 Lamborghini Huracán, a 2021 Rolls-Royce Dawn Convertible, a 2018 Lamborghini Aventador and a 2026 Toyota Tundra.

The service confirmed that all the vehicles had been stolen abroad before being smuggled into Nigeria.

The statement read, “As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen international confidence in Nigeria’s anti-smuggling and cargo intelligence system, the Nigeria Customs Service has formally handed over intercepted stolen luxury vehicles traced to Canada.

“The handover ceremony took place on Monday, 4 May 2026, at the Tin Can Island Port, where the Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Nasser Salihou, officially received the recovered vehicles from the Customs Area Controller of the Command, Comptroller Frank Onyeka.

“The recovery followed months of intelligence sharing and operational collaboration between the NCS and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, after authorities in Canada traced a number of stolen high-end vehicles believed to have been smuggled into Nigeria via international shipping channels.

“Internal Customs documents dated 5 May 2026 showed that the intercepted vehicles included a 2019 Lexus RX350, a 2019 Mercedes-Benz G550, a 2023 Land Rover Range Rover, a 2019 Lamborghini Huracán, a 2021 Rolls-Royce Dawn Convertible, a 2018 Lamborghini Aventador and a 2026 Toyota Tundra, all confirmed to have been stolen and illegally exported before ending up in Nigeria.”

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Onyeka disclosed that one of the vehicles, a Toyota Tacoma, was secretly concealed inside a container carrying other automobiles before Customs officers intercepted it.

According to him, the suspicious consignment had not left Customs custody when intelligence from Canadian authorities triggered immediate enforcement action.

“What looked like a routine cargo movement quickly became an international criminal investigation.

A 60-year-old man Romanus Nwabara was among three persons with disability (PWD) arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for drug trafficking during interdiction operations in parts of Anambra and Kwara state.

Based on credible intelligence, Nwabara was on Wednesday 6^th May 2026 traced to Akpaka Forest, Onitsha where he was found with 250grams of skunk in retail sachets. In a different raid at Ogbunike area of the state, NDLEA officers on Thursday 7^th May arrested another PWD Amos Kenneth, 25, with 160.3grams of Tramadol 225mg and 100mg; 80 pills of Diazepam; 38.23grams of Exol 5 and 176.93 grams of skunk.

In Kwara, NDLEA operatives on patrol along Bode Saadu on Friday 8^th May intercepted a commercial vehicle and in the course of a search,  one of the passengers, a PWD, Usman Salisu was found with 6.3 kilograms skunk concealed in a brown school bag.

Operatives of a Special Operations Unit in NDLEA on Friday 8^th May raided a Lekki Lagos mansion used as stash house where 4,000 parcels of Loud, a strong strain of imported cannabis weighing 2,326 kilograms with a street value of over Five Billion Eight Hundred and Fifteen Million Naira (N5,815,000,000.00) were recovered. Also seized from the house located at 36 African lane Lekki Phase 1 include: two Mercedes benz buses and different designer sachets used in packaging the illicit substance for retail distribution.

While Emmanuel Osita Okeke, 38, was arrested with 129kg skunk at Nyanya Karu, Nasarawa state on Monday 4^th May,  NDLEA operatives on patrol along Okene/Lokoja highway, Kogi state on Friday 8th May intercepted a white commuter J5  bus heading to Abuja. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 76 jumbo bags of skunk weighing 766kg and the arrest of three suspects: Mathew Omohove; Ebuka Desmond and Babangida Musa.

In an operation at Ijora Badia area of Lagos, NDLEA officers on Wednesday 6^th May raided a makeshift skuchies production factory where two suspects: Bose Jamiu and Gbenga Gege were arrested. They were caught in the act of cooking cannabis and mixing same with other illicit substances. A total of 270 litres of already produced skuchies and 106grams of Tramadol 225mg were recovered from them.

With the same zeal, Commands and formations of the Agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, sensitization activities in schools, worship centres, work places and communities among others in the past week. These include: WADA enlightenment lecture for students and staff of Ta’al Model Secondary School, Lafia, Nasarawa; Federal College of Education, Ilawe Ekiti; traditional rulers in Udi LGA, Enugu; Adventist Secondary Technical College, Owerrinta Isialangwa LGA, Abia; Golden Anchor Secondary School, Shomolu, Lagos; Mary Hanney Secondary School, Oron, Akwa Ibom; Mallam Ibrahim Islamiyya School, Rano, Kano; Isemi-Ile Grammar School, Isemi-Ile, Kajola LGA, Oyo state, among others.

While commending the officers and men of the SOU, Anambra, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa and Lagos Commands of the Agency for the arrests and seizures, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) noted their drug supply reduction efforts balanced with WADA sensitization activities while he charged them and their compatriots across the country to maintain the current tempo.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority over the weekend confirmed the occurrence of a devastating fatal road traffic incident involving a heavily-loaded bucket truck which tragically claimed the lives of an innocent pedestrian and a motorcyclist along the Iyana-Iba Flyover inward the main gate of Lagos State University on the main carriageway of the Badagry Expressway.

Preliminary security findings revealed that the fully-loaded bucket truck was reportedly travelling on a top speed from Volkswagen inward Badagry when the driver fatally knocked down an innocent pedestrian. Rather than bringing the vehicle to an immediate halt after the initial impact, the truck driver recklessly continued his movement along the corridor.

In a courageous yet tragic attempt to intercept the fleeing vehicle, a motorcyclist, accompanied by another sympathizer, pursued the truck with the intention of compelling the driver to stop and face the consequences of his actions. However, in a shocking turn of events, the truck driver rammed violently into the motorcycle during the pursuit, resulting in the instantaneous death of the motorcyclist, while the accompanying sympathizer miraculously escaped unhurt.

Operatives of the LASTMA Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team, who were strategically deployed along the Badagry Expressway corridor for routine all-night traffic monitoring and emergency response operations, swiftly arrived at the scene and undertook the painstaking evacuation of the deceased motorcyclist whose body had become trapped beneath the front wheel tyre of the bucket truck.

The truck driver was immediately apprehended by vigilant LASTMA officials and subsequently handed over to security operatives attached to the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps Accident and Emergency Response Team for further investigation and necessary legal procedures.

While the remains of the deceased motorcyclist were evacuated by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the corpse of the innocent pedestrian earlier killed by the truck was respectfully handed over to his grieving relatives who later arrived at the accident scene after being duly informed of the unfortunate tragedy.

Furthermore, both the loaded bucket truck and the severely damaged motorcycle involved in the incident were evacuated to the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, pending the conclusion of comprehensive investigations into the catastrophic occurrence.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed profound grief and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the two deceased victims.

He described the unfortunate incident as a painful reminder of the grave consequences of reckless driving, particularly amongst articulated vehicle operators and truck drivers who frequently disregard established traffic regulations and safety protocols on major highways.

Mr. Bakare-Oki therefore sternly admonished truck drivers and other road users to always comply strictly with regulated speed limits and exercise utmost caution, both during daytime and nocturnal operations, in order to avert needless loss of innocent lives on Lagos roads.

The General Manager further reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of LASTMA towards sustaining aggressive surveillance, traffic enforcement, emergency rescue interventions and collaborative engagements with relevant security and safety agencies to enhance road safety across the State.

At least 12 individuals have been killed in separate attacks targeting communities in Riyom and Bassa Local Government Areas of Plateau State. The attacks took place during the late hours of May 8 and the early hours of May 9, occurring amidst a resurgence of violence and retaliatory killings in various parts of the state.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, that three persons were killed after suspected militia members attacked Gwa Rim village in Riyom LGA at about 11pm on Thursday.

The sources said troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), who had earlier been deployed in Angwan Wereng following a security threat alert, responded after receiving distress calls over sporadic gunfire in the area.

“On arrival at the scene, troops discovered three locals already killed by the attackers who fled on sighting the advancing security personnel,” a military source was quoted as saying.

The victims were identified as Alpha David, Matthew Solomon, and Timothy Dachung.

The sources said troops subsequently dominated the area and launched operations to track down the fleeing attackers and prevent further violence.

However, tension reportedly escalated after some youths in the community resisted attempts by security operatives to evacuate the corpses to a mortuary.

In a separate incident, no fewer than nine persons were killed after gunmen attacked Zhe Brazongo village in Bassa LGA.

Security sources told Makama that the attack occurred at about 12:15am on Friday after troops received reports of gunshots from the community.

According to the sources, troops mobilised to the village following the distress call, but the attackers had fled before security operatives arrived.

“During search operations around the village, troops discovered nine corpses of villagers with gunshot wounds and machete cuts,” another military source said.

Preliminary findings indicated that the attackers invaded the community in large numbers and opened fire on residents before escaping through nearby routes.

Several persons were also reportedly injured in the attack.

Security personnel later took control of the area to prevent further attacks and restore calm.

The latest attacks are part of renewed violence recorded in Plateau communities, particularly in Riyom, Bassa, Barkin Ladi, and Mangu LGAs.

Military authorities said troops of Operation Enduring Peace have intensified patrols, rapid response operations, and intelligence-driven missions across vulnerable communities to contain the worsening security situation.
