Ayodele Fayose, who used to be the governor of Ekiti state, visited Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, at his palace in Ibadan. Ibadan is the capital city of Oyo state. He made this visit a few days after he said that Seyi Makinde, the current governor of Oyo, is trying to remove the monarch‘s position.

It was not immediately clear what the former governor discussed with the Olubadan, as the palace has yet to issue an official statement on the visit.

Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, has denied reports that he is trying to remove Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo.

In a statement from Adeola Oloko, his media representative, the monarch called the social media stories “false and misleading.”  “To say the least, this is a lie.” Ladoja said, adding that a traditional ruler has no constitutional power to impeach an elected governor.

“You don’t have to be a former governor or a distinguished senator to know that a monarch has no power to impeach a local government chairman, let alone a state governor.”

He expressed concern over the conflicting narratives in the political space, recalling that barely 24 hours earlier, Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Ekiti, had alleged a plot by the Oyo state government to remove him as Olubadan.

“Now, it is the Olubadan who is allegedly planning to impeach the governor. So, who is fooling who?” the statement queried.

The Olubadan warned against dragging the revered stool into partisan politics and urged the public to disregard the rumours to avoid unnecessary tension in the state.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the palace said there is no rift between the king and the governor of the state.

“We wish to make it abundantly clear that there is no rift between Kabiyesi and Olori omo oba of Ibadanland. In addition,the Olubadan, did not travel out of Ibadan to avoid the coronation ceremony slated for Friday 3rd of April,” the statement reads.

“We wish to make it abundantly clear that Kabiyesi is hale and hearty in Ibadan,and performing the role expected of him as Olubadan.

”For the avoidance of doubt,the three concerned High Chiefs due to be coronated have formally informed the Olubadan that they would be unavailable, and have, therefore, asked for postponement.”

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Tuesday reiterated his claim that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is plotting to remove the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, despite earlier denials from the state government and the palace.

In a statement shared on his official X handle, Fayose alleged that “those who are still in doubt” should watch unfolding events, insisting that Governor Makinde is behind a plan to remove the Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. He claimed that recent accusations against the monarch were part of a wider strategy to justify action against him.

He further said that earlier denials of any rift between the governor and the Olubadan were misleading, adding that new allegations that the monarch was planning to impeach Governor Makinde formed part of what he described as “an orchestration” aimed at laying the groundwork for the monarch to be questioned.

The renewed allegation comes amid rising political tension in the state, even as the Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Gbenga Oyekola, has distanced himself from reports of any impeachment plot against the governor.

Oyekola, who represents Atiba State Constituency, stated in a post on his verified Facebook page that he was not involved in any such arrangement, adding that he would not take part in actions capable of destabilising Oyo State.

“I hereby completely disassociate myself from any arrangement or activity that has the potential to disrupt the peace of Oyo State. I was never invited, never consulted, and was not part of any such meetings or arrangements,” he said.

He also reaffirmed his loyalty to the governor, saying, “I cannot and will not be disloyal to my boss… I remain firmly committed to the peace, unity, and continued progress of Oyo State.”

Fayose’s latest remarks follow his earlier allegation that there was a plan to depose the Olubadan, a claim that both the Oyo State Government and the palace have dismissed.

In a post on his X account, Fayose alleged that Governor Seyi Makinde was plotting the removal of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. He wrote, “I heard reliably that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is plotting the removal of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rahidi Adewolu Ladoja.”

In response, the Olubadan’s media aide said there was no conflict between the palace and the government, noting, “It will be most unfortunate if it is not a rumour. Though I read it just the way you read it online. I don’t see the cause of friction between the governor and Olubadan of Ibadanland.”

Similarly, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, dismissed the allegation, stating that the government had “never contemplated, discussed, or planned such an action,” and described the claim as unfounded.

He added, “By now, Nigerians know who and what to believe, especially when the information comes from a particular quarter. Oyo State Government has never contemplated, discussed, or planned such an action.

“There has to be a credible motive for every government action, and this, coming from the unofficial spokesman of our opponents, is better put in the refuse dump where it belongs. Desperate politics foists thoughtless propaganda and reduces democracy into a joke.”

Pastor Ayobami Oyeniyi (Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Region 5, Agege) preached that returning to give thanks signifies additional blessing, like one leper out of 10 whose healing was made whole as stated in Luke 17:11-19. Pilgrims’ groups from both batches processed forward, dancing and offering gifts.

Board Secretary Dr. Okudero Gbolabo Omoniyi reported visits to sacred sites in Jordan and Israel, calling the exercise operationally, logistically and spiritually successful, and commending pilgrims’ conduct.

He thanked Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat and Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat; NCPC Executive Secretary Bishop Prof Stephen Adegbite; Commissioner Hon. The vehicles were presented during the statutory meeting of the Ogun State Council of Obas held at the Obas’ Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Thursday.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this in a post on his X handle, stating that the gesture was in recognition of the monarchs’ contributions to maintaining peace, stability, and development in the state.

He described traditional rulers as custodians of culture and key intermediaries between the government and the people, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting them in their roles.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, an Igbo cultural group, has stopped the crowning of Eze Ndigbo, which is the King of the Igbos, in foreign countries. This decision came after some violent protests happened after a coronation ceremony in South Africa last month.

Igbo groups living outside Nigeria often have cultural events to share their traditions. During these events, a man is chosen by his community to be called Eze Ndigbo and to act as their leader.

Last month, when someone was chosen as Eze Ndigbo in Kugompo, which is in South London, it caused a lot of anger. Some South Africans attacked cars and buildings they thought belonged to foreigners.

The Nigerian high commission in South Africa apologized for the problem, saying the event was just symbolic and not related to politics.

In July 2025, a similar coronation in Ghana caused protests where people asked Nigerians to leave the country. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the minister of state for foreign affairs, went to Accra to help solve the issue.

On Thursday, members of the Imeobi, the main group of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, met in Enugu about this matter. Odumegwu-Ojukwu was present at the meeting and said that these coronations have made Nigeria look bad.

Magnus Eze, who helps the minister with communication, said that people can express their culture but should not disturb the people in the country they are living in.

At the meeting, the national leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, along with the south east council of traditional rulers, decided to stop the idea of Eze Igbo outside Igboland.

Azuta Mbata, the leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, shared the decision of the Igbo cultural group.

“Anybody who is being awarded that type of title anywhere outside of Igbo land is on his own. It’s unknown to the Igbo people, and we will call upon all state governors; we’ll correspond to all embassies in the world, informing them about the position of Ndigbo,” Mbata said.

“The position of Eze Ndigbo anywhere outside Igbo land is hereby alienated and proscribed. That is the position of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide.

“We will determine in consultation with the kings of Igbo land what the punishment will be for anybody who goes against this position and that punishment will be implemented at the village level.

“Your hometown, your town union will be under injunction to implement that punishment, but we are going to declare that punishment after due consultation.”

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the ministry of foreign affairs would communicate the decision through its missions and high commissions globally.

The Federal Government has condemned the coronation and activities of individuals who assume the title of Eze Ndigbo (Igbo traditional rulers) in foreign countries, describing the trend as embarrassing.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, made this known while addressing members of Imeobi—the highest decision-making body of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide—at a meeting held in Enugu on Thursday.

In a statement issued by her Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Magnus Eze, the minister noted that the practice has become a major source of embarrassment to the government, the Igbo people, Nigerians, and even citizens of host countries where such titles are conferred.

Tensions recently escalated in South Africa’s Eastern Cape after the controversial coronation of Solomon Ogbonna Eziko as “Eze Ndigbo na East London.” The development sparked outrage among local communities, traditional leaders, and political groups, leading to violent protests, destruction of foreign-owned vehicles, and looting.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu recalled a similar situation in Ghana in July 2025, where protests erupted over the same issue. She explained that she led a delegation to Accra to calm tensions after some Ghanaian groups demanded that Nigerians leave the country.

She stressed that while cultural expression is important, it should not create conflict with host communities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she added, has continued to engage diplomatically to manage the situation in South Africa.

According to her, the delegation held meetings with Ghana’s President John Mahama, government officials, security agencies, traditional leaders, and representatives of the Nigerian community. Tensions were eventually reduced following President Mahama’s intervention, as he emphasized that xenophobia has no place in Ghana.

She also noted that the crisis in Ghana was partly fueled by the circulation of an old video made by a Nigerian resident over a decade ago, but the situation was quickly brought under control.

The minister warned that the safety of Nigerians and their businesses abroad could have been at risk without timely intervention. She urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo to enforce sanctions against individuals who violate its directive banning the conferment of Igbo traditional titles outside Igboland.

She further assured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would help circulate Ohanaeze’s official position through Nigerian embassies and missions worldwide.

The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata, reaffirmed the group’s stance, stating that the title of Eze Ndigbo outside Igboland is not recognized. He added that anyone who assumes such a title does so independently and not on behalf of the Igbo people.

He declared the title illegal outside Igboland and said appropriate sanctions would be determined in consultation with traditional rulers and enforced at the community level.

Eziko was crowned on March 14, 2026, in the Gompo area of East London—a move widely seen in South Africa as a violation of established traditional leadership structures. Protests began on March 30, organized by groups including ActionSA, and later turned violent.

Reports indicate that at least 13 vehicles were destroyed, with incidents of looting and a stabbing. Police eventually used stun grenades and tear gas to restore order.

The Eastern Cape House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders condemned the coronation as a serious breach of customary laws, while the South African Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs declared it illegal and inconsistent with constitutional provisions.

Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, in collaboration with the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers, has formally abolished the practice of conferring the Eze Igbo title outside Igboland.

Although Igbo diaspora groups often promote their culture through various activities, the installation of traditional rulers abroad has repeatedly caused tension both within Igbo communities and between Nigerians and their host countries.

The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa distanced itself from the coronation, describing it as a cultural event that was misinterpreted and not an officially recognized monarchy.

Similarly, the Nigerian Consulate in Pretoria called for calm, urging Nigerians to remain cautious and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. Deputy High Commissioner Olajide Ogunmadeji explained to protesters that the coronation was largely ceremonial and not intended to challenge existing traditional authorities.

The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, started the Ibadan Community Guard on Tuesday. This group will work together with security agencies to help police the 11 Local Government Areas that make up Ibadan.

Alongside this, the Ibadan Economic Investment and Business Development Desk and the Ibadan Food Security Initiative, also known as Gaari Ibadan, were also launched during the event.

The ceremony took place at the Olubadan’s Palace, Oke Aremo, located in the Ibadan North Local Government Area. The Community Guard will be placed in all 11 Local Government Areas of Ibadan.

The inauguration was necessitated by the prevailing security challenge in some of the council areas.

The occasion had in attendance members of Olubadan-In-Council, former Minister of Industry and Iyalaje Iyalode of Ibadanland, Onikepo Akande, Dotun Sanusi and President General, Central Council of Ibadanland, Ajeniyi Ajewole and a host of others.

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede has felicitated Christians across the country on the celebration of Easter and expressed strong hope that Nigeria will surely break the yokes of corruption because “We are not defined by corruption, we cannot be defeated by it”

He disclosed this in Abuja on Saturday, April 4, 2026 in his Easter message to the nation.

The EFCC’s boss charged Nigerians to imbibe the lesson of Easter which pertains to victory over trial, corruption and death, stressing that the lesson is instructive for us as a nation

“The lesson of Easter is all about undeniable victory over trial, corruption and death. This lesson is instructive for us as a nation. We will surely overcome the trial and trauma of corruption. We are not defined by corruption, we cannot be defeated by it”.

He further charged Nigerians to keep hopes alive and continue to keep faith with the EFCC in its relentless war against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.

The Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse (LMDC) recently hosted a delegation from the United Kingdom Ministry of Justice on a learning visit aimed at fostering knowledge exchange in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and court-connected mediation.

The UK delegation, comprising Sorrel Evans, Justice, Home Affairs Attaché and Christina Soper, Head of Unit, Rule of Law, Ministry of Justice, was received by the former Director/CEO of the LMDC, Mrs. Achere Cole, alongside members of the Management Team. She reaffirmed the LMDC’s commitment to continuous learning, institutional excellence, and international collaboration.

The LMDC Management Team provided an overview of their respective roles and responsibilities within the institution. Mrs Olubusola Ojo, the former Registrar and Head of Operations, led detailed discussions on the LMDC’s operations, highlighting its institutional framework, case management processes, and the guiding principles underpinning its success.

Earlier, the delegation outlined the purpose of the visit: to gain insight into the LMDC’s innovative Multi-Door Courthouse model and to explore best practices in access to justice and dispute resolution.

The visit underscored the shared commitment of both jurisdictions to strengthening the rule of law and advancing the use of ADR mechanisms in the delivery of justice.
