The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, has expressed concern over the declining relevance of graduates produced by Nigerian tertiary institutions, attributing the trend to a widening disconnect between academia and industry.

The monarch said many graduates lack the knowledge and practical skills required by employers, making it increasingly difficult for industries to recruit candidates who can effectively meet workplace demands.

Oba Matemilola spoke on Thursday in Abeokuta during the unveiling of a 10 Gigabits-per-second fibre optic infrastructure and smart campus initiative at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), implemented in partnership with the Advanced Technological Incubation and Research Centre.

He said the initiative is aimed at bridging the long-standing gap between the classroom and industry by promoting practical learning, research, innovation and the commercialisation of research outputs.

“One of the key problems we have, particularly in Nigeria, is that our institutions are not properly equipped to carry out research the way it should be done, compared with our counterparts in the West and South Asia.

“With that, we are rapidly losing ground. Through this research work, we hope to compete with the rest of the world,” the monarch said.

Oba Matemilola noted that the weak relationship between industries and tertiary institutions has reduced opportunities for collaboration, as many organisations no longer see sufficient value in research produced by Nigerian institutions.

“That’s one of the reasons why many of the big companies in Nigeria do not relate to what we usually describe as the ‘town and gown’ relationship. The gap that has been created between the town and gown is because many industries do not find relevance in the work being done in our institutions,” he added.

He expressed optimism that the new digital infrastructure would expose students to hands-on learning, strengthen research capacity and encourage the development of solutions to real-life industrial challenges.

The traditional ruler further described the 10Gbps fibre optic infrastructure as a transformative project capable of positioning MAPOLY among the most technologically advanced tertiary institutions in West Africa if effectively utilised.

Earlier, the Rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Dr Babatunde Jolaoso, described the initiative as a major milestone that would improve the institution’s research capabilities, digital learning environment and global competitiveness.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure re-election in the 2027 presidential election, describing the contest as “a coronation, not an election.”

Keyamo made the remarks on Thursday while speaking on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, where he defended the performance of the Tinubu administration and dismissed the chances of the opposition.

The All Progressives Congress chieftain said the party’s recent electoral victories demonstrated Nigerians’ continued support for the APC.

“We have won in Ekiti now. We told them to vote, they voted. FCT they voted, we won,” he said.

Asked whether he was concerned about the prospects of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential race, Keyamo said he did not see either posing a serious threat to the ruling party.

“I’m looking around, between you and me, where will Obi’s votes come from? I can’t see it,” he said.

When asked if Atiku represented a challenge to the APC, the minister replied, “Which Atiku? Nightmare who?” before laughing.

Keyamo maintained that President Tinubu’s return to office was virtually assured, citing what he described as demographic realities.

“I want to make a profound statement as a closing statement. Not out of arrogance, not out of overconfidence, but out of pure demographic calculations: the 2027 election is a coronation, not an election.

“I repeat don’t take me out of context out of pure demographic calculations, it’s a coronation,” he said.

President Tinubu is expected to seek a second term on the APC platform in the 2027 presidential election alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima.

His anticipated challengers include Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, with the 2027 poll expected to be keenly contested among the country’s major political parties.

The Accord Party has petitioned President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and other key stakeholders over the alleged harassment, intimidation and arrest of its members and government officials by the police ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.

The party also renewed its call for the immediate removal of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, accusing him of partisanship and alleging that his continued stay in office could undermine the credibility of the forthcoming governorship election.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the National Chairman of the Accord Party, Maxwell Mgbudem, alleged that about 100 of the party’s leaders, candidates, members and supporters had been arrested and detained across the state, with some reportedly transferred to Abuja.

Mgbudem described the alleged arrests as politically motivated, warning that they pose a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and the integrity of the governorship election.

He claimed that previous complaints over attacks on the party’s campaign council, offices, supporters and campaign materials were ignored by security agencies.

“Accord is peacefully carrying out its grassroots campaign for the August 15 governorship election in Osun State. We had previously addressed the media on the mindless killing of its leaders and supporters, multiple attacks on Imole Campaign Council and the party’s offices, and destruction of campaign billboards by thugs.

“These attacks were duly reported to the Police and other security agencies in the state; sadly, none of these known hoodlums was arrested, let alone prosecuted, to serve as a deterrent to others,” he said.

According to Mgbudem, the alleged failure of the police to act on the reported attacks informed the party’s earlier demand for the removal of the state Commissioner of Police.

“As at today, about 100 Accord leaders, candidates, members and supporters across the state have been arrested and detained by the Police; some of them were moved to Abuja.

“It is glaring that their arrests are politically motivated, to frustrate, weaken and dampen our party’s campaign efforts in Osun State,” he added.

The party further condemned what it described as the targeted harassment, intimidation, arrest and detention of its leaders and members without formal charges.

Accord appealed to President Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, civil society organisations, the international community and other stakeholders to intervene and ensure a level playing field for all political parties participating in the election.

The party also urged its supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding despite what it described as provocation.

“No brute force will break the resolve of the people of Osun from identifying with Accord and its candidate in the upcoming gubernatorial poll. In the end, the ballot is stronger than the bullet,” the statement said.

Political campaigns have intensified ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State, while security agencies have repeatedly pledged to remain neutral and ensure a peaceful environment before, during and after the poll.

The Secretary to the Osun State Government, Teslim Igbalaiye, has regained his freedom after being released by the Osun State Police Command.

His release was announced on Thursday by the spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, Pelumi Olajengbesi, through a post on his verified Facebook page.

Olajengbesi thanked the Inspector-General of Police and the Osun State Commissioner of Police for what he described as responding to public calls for justice.

“We sincerely appreciate the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, for listening to the voice of reason despite pressure and responding to the people’s demand regarding the unlawful arrest of the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Teslim Igbalaiye.

“The Nigerian Police Force best serves the nation when it upholds justice, the rule of law and stands against oppression. Welcome back, Chief Teslim Igbalaiye. Your courage and sacrifice for the people of Osun State will not be forgotten,” he wrote.

The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, also confirmed Igbalaiye’s release during a telephone interview with journalists in Osogbo.

Igbalaiye and five others were arrested on Wednesday after police raided his residence in Osogbo.

According to the police, one of those arrested at the residence, Oladele Abiodun, was on its watchlist over alleged criminal offences.

The command said officers recovered ₦4.81 million in cash, two Permanent Voter Cards, a voter register, a Dynabook laptop, a photocopy machine and a printer from the residence.

The other suspects arrested were identified as Akande Taiwo, 60; Adeyemo Lukman, 45; Olaoye Muftau, 50; and Aderemi Musliu, 40.

Police said the operation followed intelligence reports that a criminal group was operating from the location.

Ojelabi stated that the recovered cash and voter register had raised concerns over possible electoral offences, including alleged vote-buying, criminal conspiracy and harbouring a wanted suspect, adding that investigations were ongoing.

The SSG’s release came hours after the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, alleged that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, ordered the arrest following an incident at an Independent National Electoral Commission stakeholders’ meeting.

Egbedun claimed the commissioner became upset after being booed by some participants and allegedly ordered Igbalaiye’s arrest after noticing him laughing during the incident.

The police, however, maintained that the operation was intelligence-driven and linked to ongoing investigations into alleged criminal activities and possible electoral offences.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has assured Nigerians that the 2027 general elections will be free, fair and credible, stressing that every valid vote will count and determine the outcome of the polls.

The commission also dismissed the belief that politicians could manipulate elections by stockpiling Permanent Voter Cards, saying technological improvements in the electoral process have rendered such tactics ineffective.

Speaking on Thursday at a seminar organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ilorin, the Head of Voter Education and Publicity for INEC in Kwara State, Dr Adejumo Peter, said politicians relying on PVC hoarding were “living in the past.”

“INEC has introduced measures that make it impossible for anyone to use another person’s PVC to vote. That is why politicians have shifted their focus to vote-buying,” he said.

“Many politicians are still living in the past. Stockpiling and carting away PVCs can no longer guarantee electoral victory.”

Peter assured residents of Kwara State that the commission would strictly comply with the Electoral Act and its operational guidelines throughout the electoral process.

“INEC in Kwara will follow the rules and procedures laid down by the commission. We will ensure that the elections are conducted on the basis of one person, one vote. At the end of the exercise, the outcome will reflect the will of the people,” he said.

He also urged political parties and their candidates to conduct issue-based campaigns and avoid violence before, during and after the elections.

“I urge politicians to play by the rules. They should campaign on their manifestos and shun violence before, during and after the elections. Let us conduct the elections peacefully like a sporting contest. They should accept the outcome of the elections,” he added.

Delivering a presentation on “Dissecting the Amended Electoral Act 2026: Innovations and Implications for Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections,” the Head of INEC’s Legal Unit in Kwara State, Abdulfatai Atata, described the amended law as a major step forward in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

According to him, the legislation introduces reforms designed to improve transparency, strengthen internal party democracy and expand the use of technology in elections.

He, however, noted that the amended Act also raises important legal and practical issues, including constitutional consistency, enforcement of campaign finance regulations, judicial oversight of party affairs and the grounds for election petitions.

“At the end of the day, the success of these reforms will depend not only on the provisions of the law but also on effective implementation, strong institutions and sound judicial interpretation,” Atata said.

A member of the House of Representatives representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, Adedeji Olajide, has pledged ₦50 million to support the University of Ibadan Students’ Legislative Summit, reaffirming his commitment to youth empowerment and leadership development.

Olajide made the announcement during his induction into the University of Ibadan Students’ Union at an event held in Adeoyo, Ring Road, Ibadan, on Wednesday.

The lawmaker, who is also the Allied Peoples Movement’s candidate for the Oyo South Senatorial District in the 2027 election, praised the unity and progress within the students’ body, saying sustained mentorship would help unlock greater achievements.

Describing his induction as both an honour and a responsibility, Olajide said he was prepared to invest more resources in equipping young people in Oyo State and the University of Ibadan with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive world.

“My new role will be to help you restore values and discipline. I also want to advise you all to remain focused and avoid distractions on campus. On the Students’ Legislative Summit, I will support you with the sum of ₦50 million,” he said.

Popularly known as Odidiomo, Olajide noted that the induction would strengthen students’ social networks and encourage broader engagement among young leaders.

He also highlighted his recent donation of 20 laptops to the Oyo State Youth Parliament through the Oyo State Agency for Youth Development, describing it as part of efforts to bridge the digital divide among young people.

“The digital gap in our society is too wide, and we need to begin closing it aggressively. I will soon launch a digital centre, and I want students to be part of it. Participants will also benefit from a training programme that I will personally facilitate,” he said.

Olajide urged the newly inaugurated members of the Oyo State Youth Parliament to remain focused, united and committed to public service as they prepare for future leadership roles.

Speaking at the event, Speaker of the University of Ibadan Students’ Legislative Council, John Oludele, said the induction recognised Olajide’s longstanding contributions to youth and student development in Oyo State and beyond.

He described the honour as a reflection of the lawmaker’s dedication to empowering young people and expressed confidence that it would inspire others to support educational and youth-focused initiatives.

Chairperson of the University Students’ Union Representative Council Legislative Summit, Oluwagbemileke Ajayi, called on the government to address infrastructure challenges in tertiary institutions by improving hostels, libraries, classrooms, ICT facilities and mentorship programmes to create a more conducive learning environment.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Oyo State Agency for Youth Development, Prince Adebowale Falana, commended Olajide for his continued investment in youth development and educational advancement across the state.

A delegation of Kano business leaders and top government officials has appealed to the Federal Government to expedite the release of the ₦5 billion relief fund approved for victims of the Singer Market fire disaster.

The appeal was made during a meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the spokesperson to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa.

The delegation said the visit was aimed at reminding the Federal Government of its commitment to assist thousands of traders who lost their businesses and sources of livelihood in the devastating market fire.

According to the statement, the timely release of the intervention fund would provide much-needed relief to affected traders and support efforts to revive commercial activities at the market.

During the meeting, members of the delegation thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving the intervention and appealed for the prompt completion of the disbursement process so beneficiaries could access the funds without further delay.

The delegation included the President of the Association of Kano Business Community, Alhaji Sabiu Bako; the Commissioner for Finance, Dr Ismail Aliyu Danmaraya; APC National Ex-Officio, Muhammad Jamu Yusuf; Chairman of Singer Market, Barrister Junaidu Muhammad Zakari; and businessman, Alhaji Kabiru Adamu Gano.

In his response, Akume assured the delegation that their request had been noted and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting victims of the Singer Market fire.

Vice President Kashim Shettima had earlier announced the approval of the ₦5 billion intervention during a reception held to welcome Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf into the All Progressives Congress.

The event marked Yusuf’s defection to the APC alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen on January 26, 2026.

At the event, Shettima also disclosed that the Progressive Governors’ Forum had pledged an additional ₦3 billion to assist victims of the fire.

“President Bola Tinubu has approved the release of ₦5 billion to the Kano State Government as palliative for this incident. In addition, the Progressive Governors’ Forum, under the leadership of Governor Hope Uzodimma, has pledged ₦3 billion to support the victims of the Singer Market fire,” the Vice President had said.

Sahara Group co-founder, Tonye Cole, has disclosed that the energy company adopted a foreign corporate identity in its early years to overcome what he described as the “colonial mentality” that favoured expatriate businesses over indigenous firms in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Speaking on the Afryopolitan podcast published on Wednesday, Cole said Sahara Group was registered in the Isle of Man and operated through a UK entity to create the impression that it was a foreign-owned company. He explained that the strategy was designed to help the young Nigerian founders gain credibility and access business opportunities.

According to him, foreign companies were widely perceived as more competent at the time, making it difficult for local entrepreneurs to compete.

“What I remember about back then was that there was what you would call the expatriate mentality, colonial mentality at the time. It just meant that if you were white in Nigeria, then you would basically get everything,” Cole said.

He explained that, in addition to the preference for foreign firms, he and his partners also faced age-related discrimination, as many potential clients struggled to believe that people in their late twenties could own and run a company in the oil and gas industry.

“We would go into offices and realise that if we went in as young 27 or 28-year-olds and said we owned the company, people would look at us as if to say, ‘Who are you? You can’t do that.’ So there was that ageism issue,” he recalled.

Cole said they observed that most successful businesses in the industry either belonged to foreigners or had foreign affiliations, prompting them to establish Sahara Group’s overseas identity.

“Everybody who was succeeding in the business had foreign companies or they were foreign companies. So we registered the company abroad in the Isle of Man. We had a UK entity,” he said.

To reinforce the image, the founders enlisted the help of one of their former teachers, who became the fictional face of the company under the name “Dr J.”

“We agreed with one of my partner’s teachers and said, ‘We’re going to say that we work for you.’ You had a lovely name, Dr J, which was not a Nigerian name,” Cole explained.

He said they introduced themselves to clients as employees rather than owners, adding that the arrangement earned them sympathy and trust because many believed they were simply young Nigerians working for an expatriate company.

“We were representatives to ourselves, but we would just say we were staff. People thought they were helping young Nigerians working for this expatriate company, and that helped us gain acceptance,” he said.

Cole, however, noted that the strategy became difficult to maintain after about three years, as clients began asking questions about the mysterious foreign executive whose signature appeared on official correspondence but was never seen.

“It took them about three years to ask, ‘This Dr J who signs all the letters, how come we’ve never seen him?’” he said.

Reflecting on the experience, Cole said it highlighted the structural challenges many Nigerian entrepreneurs faced in building successful businesses at the time.

He also recalled that his entrepreneurial journey started while studying Architecture at the University of Lagos, where he and his partners built architectural models for firms, experiences he said shaped his understanding of innovation, partnerships and adaptability.

Since then, Sahara Group has grown into a multinational energy company with operations across several countries. Cole later entered politics and contested the 2023 Rivers State governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), J-K Gadzama, has rejected the decision of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) directing his suspension from legal practice for three years, describing the ruling as unsupported by the evidence and the applicable law.

Gadzama made his position known in a statement issued on Wednesday following the LPDC’s direction in Complaint No. BB/LPDC/1314/2024, instituted by Mr. Chris Alashi against Ocha P. Ulegede, Esq. and himself.

According to the senior lawyer, although he had been informed of the Committee’s decision, he was yet to receive the certified true copy of the directive.

He disclosed that he had, however, instructed his legal team to file an immediate appeal before the Supreme Court.

Citing Section 11(8)(a) of the Legal Practitioners Act, Gadzama maintained that the filing of an appeal within the time prescribed by law automatically suspends the implementation of the LPDC’s decision pending the determination of the appeal.

He therefore assured clients, colleagues and members of the public that his right to practise law remains valid until the appeal is determined.

“I wish to reassure my clients, colleagues, friends and the general public that, upon the filing of the appeal within the time prescribed by law, my right to practise as a legal practitioner remains unaffected pending the final determination of the appeal,” he said.

Gadzama said he holds the institutions established to regulate the legal profession in high esteem and remains committed to the rule of law, but respectfully disagrees with the Committee’s findings.

According to him, the allegations against him that he improperly took over another lawyer’s brief, solicited clients and wrongfully appropriated professional fees are unfounded.

He explained that he was retained directly by the judgment creditors through written letters of instruction and carried out his professional duties strictly in accordance with that retainer.

“The documentary evidence before the Committee does not support the findings made against me,” he stated.

The senior advocate further argued that the dispute essentially arose from issues relating to legal representation and professional fees, insisting that the disciplinary process was not the appropriate forum for resolving such matters.

Expressing confidence in the judicial process, Gadzama said he believes the Supreme Court will carefully examine both the legal and factual issues raised in the case and reach a just determination.

He also expressed appreciation to colleagues, clients, friends and members of the public for their support and prayers following the LPDC’s decision.

“I remain steadfast in my commitment to the legal profession, the administration of justice and the highest standards of professional integrity,” he said, adding that he remains confident that justice will ultimately prevail.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has called on political stakeholders across Nigeria to create more opportunities for women to occupy elective and leadership positions, stressing that greater inclusion is vital for national development.

The governor said women play a critical role in building society and noted that his administration has embraced gender-inclusive governance.

Aiyedatiwa made the call on Wednesday at the launch of the 774 Explode Project in Akure, the Ondo State capital. The initiative, spearheaded by the National Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress, is aimed at empowering women across the country.

Represented by his deputy, Dr Olayide Adelami, the governor urged stakeholders to work collectively to expand women’s participation in politics.

“Women are very critical to the uplifting and development of any society. They are the unseen architects of society. Women nurture families, preserve values, sustain local economies, resolve conflicts and shape future generations. Increasingly, they are also transforming public administration, entrepreneurship, technology, education, agriculture and governance. These remind us that leadership is not a function of gender but of competence, character, vision and service,” he said.

While acknowledging progress in promoting women’s participation, Aiyedatiwa said more deliberate efforts were needed to close the existing gender gap in governance.

“We must be proud of the appreciable progress we have recorded in this direction, yet we honestly admit that significant gaps still exist. We therefore advocate intentional and greater inclusion of women in elective offices, leadership positions and strategic decision-making structures.

“No longer should cultural stereotypes, economic barriers and systemic limitations hinder women from realising their full potential. This is not a call for sympathy but for deliberate and coordinated action. We must remain steadfast in this advocacy, which aligns with initiatives such as Project 774 Explode,” he added.

The governor commended the APC National Women Leader, Dr Mary Idele, for bringing the initiative to Ondo State, describing it as more than an empowerment programme.

According to him, the project underscores the importance of unlocking the potential of women in every community and ensuring they play active roles in public life.

“Historically, societies that have attained enduring greatness succeeded because they embraced inclusiveness, harnessing the talents, intellect, resilience and leadership of both men and women,” he said.

Speaking at the event, Idele also called for increased representation of women in politics, particularly young women.

“The future of our democracy depends on the inclusion of young people, especially young women. Across Nigeria, we have brilliant, educated, innovative and energetic young women whose talents must not remain on the sidelines.

“We must intentionally create opportunities for them to serve as councillors, local government chairpersons, legislators, commissioners, party executives, and indeed future governors and presidents,” she said.

Idele noted that political participation goes beyond holding office, stressing that it enables women to shape policies and influence key decisions.

She also urged mothers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders and party stakeholders to provide young women with mentorship, support and opportunities to thrive in public service.

Women remain significantly underrepresented in Nigeria’s political leadership despite years of advocacy for greater gender inclusion. Although they constitute nearly half of the country’s population and actively participate in political campaigns and party activities, their presence in elective and appointive offices remains limited.

Civil society organisations, women’s groups and development partners have continued to push for policies that promote equal opportunities, including the proposed Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill and affirmative action measures, but progress has remained slow.
