According to the KTN News channel, a Kenyan court on Monday ordered the husband of long-distance runner Agnes Tirop to be held for 20 days in connection with her murder.

Ibrahim Rotich, Tirop’s spouse, was arrested and charged with murder in the Rift Valley village of Iten, near to their shared house.

The duration would be used by police to wrap up their investigations and conduct a mental examination on the suspect, according to the court.

Rotich was apprehended by police in the coastal city of Mombasa on Thursday, allegedly attempting to escape the country. Tirop was found dead at their house on Wednesday, with several stab wounds. She was 25 years old at the time.

Tirop set a new women-only 10-kilometer world record in Germany last month, crossing the finish line in 30:01 minutes, cutting 28 seconds off the old mark set over two decades ago.

Tirop finished second in the Giants Geneva 10K competition less than two weeks ago, on October 3.

She won the 2015 World Cross Country Championships and earned bronze medals at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships in the 10,000-meter event.
