The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s Kaduna Zonal Command won the conviction of one Bobai Aya before Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court today, July 30, 2021, for offences touching on deception.

The Commission examined the criminal after a complainant filed a petition stating that he was duped into paying the convict N 1,300,000 (One Million, Three Hundred Thousand Naira Only) for a plot of land with an unfinished construction at No. 28 Ovie Akuso Close, Janruwa Kamazo, Kaduna.

He said that after payment, he realized that the land was burdened, but the inmate insisted otherwise.

According to one of the charges for which he was imprisoned reads “That you Bobai Aya, sometime in January 2017 in Kaduna within the Judicial Division of this Honourable Court, did defraud one Jehoshaphat Albarka by dishonestly inducing him to deliver to you the total sum of N 1,300,000 ( One Million Three Hundred Thousand Naira Only) when you purportedly sold a piece of land situated at Ovie Akuso Close.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to the revised charge of one count. As a result, the prosecution’s lawyer, M.O Arumemi, pleaded with the court to convict him.

Justice Khobo, found him guilty and sentenced him to ten years in jail, with a fine of N100,000 as an option.

He was also compelled to pay N1.3 million in restitution to his victim.
