O. The Zamfara Speaker and two others have been barred from proceeding with the planned impeachment of Deputy Governor Mahdi Aliyu Gusau, by a Federal High Court in Abuja. The Governor and the Chief Judge are also restrained. On Monday, Justice Obiora Egwuatu issued the restraining order after hearing from Ogwu James Onoja (SAN), who brought a motion ex-parte on behalf of the plaintiff in a complaint filed in the Peoples’ Democratic Party’s name (PDP). Onoja told the court that the House of Assembly and others were planning to impeach the Deputy Governor for refusing to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), and that it was critical that the court intervene by granting an interim restraining order against the fifth to seventh defendants (the Speaker, Governor, and Chief Judge). He maintained that because the impeachment is for a constitutionally recognized office with a set term, no amount of monetary compensation would be sufficient to mitigate the harm.
