After the British National Health Service (NHS) launched its vaccination program to all remaining adults in England, more than one million COVID-19 vaccine shots were booked in just two days.

NHS England reported that 1,008,472 appointments were made using the booking service on Friday and Saturday, an average of more than 21,000 per hour, or six every second.

Because it did not include appointments at immunization services supervised by general practitioners or persons taking the vaccine at walk-in clinics, the total amount was expected to be higher.

Since Margaret Keenan became the first member of the public to receive the vaccine on Dec. 8, 2020, the NHS has administered roughly 62 million doses.

Four out of every five adults had had their first immunization, and three out of every five had received both.

Dr. Susan Hopkins, COVID-19 director at Public Health England, stated on Sunday that she hoped that everyone over the age of 40 could obtain their vaccine before the full relaxation of lockdown restrictions on July 19.

People over the age of 40 are now being called to schedule their second vaccination, according to new expert advice.

“The NHS COVID immunization program proceeded in full swing as the finishing line approached,” said Sir Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England.

“It’s incredible to see so many young people step forward to safeguard themselves, their friends, and their families. Nearly nine million people in their twenties and thirties have now received their first injection.”

“It is fantastic to see the continuous excitement young people have for vaccines across the country,” said Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

“It is critical that we build on this momentum for second doses so that patients have the best possible protection,” he added.

The nationwide booking program allows all individuals to book a vaccine at one of the 1,600 vaccination centers, pharmacies, or GP clinics that are available.

On Sunday, hundreds of people formed huge lines outside Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium in London, which served as a pop-up vaccination clinic for one day only.

Despite the large queue, one participant claimed that the wait was just around half an hour and that people were in and out of the vaccination booths in less than 10 seconds.

It comes after similar pop-up centers were set up the day before at sporting stadiums in London.

For “Super Saturday,” massive jab clinics were set up at the Olympic Stadium, Stamford Bridge, Tottenham Hotspur FC, Charlton Athletic FC, Selhurst Park, and the Crystal Palace Athletics Centre.

In his road map to alleviate England’s lockdown, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had scheduled the end of all legal Coronavirus restrictions for Monday, but he postponed it to July 19 due to fears about the quickly spreading Delta variety.

Instead of removing the 30-person limit for weddings, venues would be urged to limit numbers depending on the amount of space required to enforce social distancing measures. (NAN/PA Media/dpa)
