Cristiano Ronaldo should have left Juventus before the start of the season, according to Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini, because his late move to Manchester United affected the team.

Ronaldo, 36, had one year remaining on his Juve deal when he returned to Old Trafford for €23 million in August.

Ronaldo’s last game for Juventus was a 2-2 draw against Udinese on the first day of the Serie A season, when his stoppage-time header was ruled out by VAR.

Chiellini told DAZN, “Cristiano Ronaldo departed on August 28.  “This is shocking, and I believe we paid him in terms of points at the start of the season.”

“It would have been better if he [Ronaldo] had gone on August 1 because we would have been more prepared and ready to start the campaign.”

In his three seasons with Juventus, Ronaldo won five trophies, including two Serie A titles. In 133 appearances, he also scored 101 goals.

Juve picked up just one point in their following three league games after Ronaldo’s departure, and they are now sixth in the rankings, 10 points behind league leaders Napoli.

“Cristiano need fresh stimulation as well as a team that encouraged him,” Chiellini continued. “When he joins a squad like that, he is always vital, as he has shown in his three years at Juve.”
