No doubt many know Alhaji Aliko Dangote for his interest in business, however, many may not truly be aware that this man with a large heart and open hands, is a magnanimous and an unrepentant philanthropist who has touched many lives than history would ever be able to record. The wealthiest man in Africa had once said, “I do not only want to be known as Africa’s Richest Man but the biggest philanthropist. I will continue to use my resources and my voice to help shape a better Nigeria, and Africa as a whole.” And that is exactly what he has been doing religiously with several philanthropic donations to different communities and individuals in Nigeria and Africa at large. The Forbes African Person of The Year, 2014 has just launched another initiative geared towards alleviating poverty and economically empowering disadvantaged women in the Nigerian society. Launching this N10billion micro-grant for disadvantaged women across the country under his Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF), Dangote did not just give hope to these women, but handed them the opportunity to feed their families too, by using the money to boost their businesses. The programme was flagged off in Katsina State, with not less than 34, 000 less privileged women benefiting from this huge largess for their economic empowerment. In the ceremony graced by the State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari and other top government officials, Dangote revealed that 1,000 women were selected from each of the State’s 34 local government areas, with each woman collecting a sum of N10, 000 each. While speaking at the ceremony, Dangote revealed that, “The Micro-grants programme is a major component of the Economic Empowerment pillar of the Foundation. It provides disadvantaged and vulnerable women with a one-off, unconditional N10,000,00 cash transfer to boost their household income generation. This we believe will help reduce their vulnerability and meet their livelihood needs”. “In the coming weeks we would be proceeding to Kebbi, Zamfara, Edo and Osun States to conduct a similar program”. Dangote further explained that the Foundation had in 2012 designated N10billion for the empowerment of disadvantaged women in 774 local government areas in the country. According to him, so far, about 360, 000 beneficiaries from Lagos, Kano, Borno, Jigawa, Kogi, Adamawa, Niger, Nasarawa, Yobe, and Sokoto States which cover 40% have been empowered. The philanthropist believes “if you empower a woman, you have empowered a nation” recalled that his Foundation had during the last Ramadan fasting season had blessed many Muslim faithfuls across Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara, with no fewer than 106, 000 food packs. Also speaking at the event, the Group Executive Director, Commercial and daughter to Mr. Dangote, Halima Aliko Dangote said the Foundation was poised to help lift the economic status of womanhood in Nigeria. Applauding Dangote’s kind gestures towards the woman in his state, Aminu Masari implored the beneficiaries to ensure they channel the money into their businesses and use the profits to educate their children. No doubt, this generosity will go along way to transform the lives of these women and they indeed confessed their gratitude explaining the extent to which the grants will help their trades. One of the beneficiaries, Habiba Abdullahi, said the grant will enable her to start trading in clothing, soap, and perfume. She prayed to God to continue to bless the family of Aliko Dangote and his Group. Another beneficiary, Nana Muhammad said she was highly elated and that she almost couldn’t believe it, just as she added that she will use the money to ginger her trading in groundnut cake and other petty businesses.
