Slavery is simply an ‘outdated’ ownership system branched out of colonialism. The emotional imprint on the minds and lives of the descendants of slaves can never be fully erased by mere reparations paid by the government of USA. Descendants of slaves do not know their origin due to the forceful and selfish act of slavery, displacing locals and transporting them to foreign lands. The descendants of slaves need to be paid reparations for emotional damage as a compensation to pacify the left-over trauma from past years of slavery.

It is necessary to point out that slavery does not directly affect the descendants of slaves, because the harsh treatment inflicted on slaves then, is not replicated in their lives. It can be argued that the claims of emotional imprint is a construct to extort resources from the government.

Descendants of slaves still have some noticeable physical indication of the ancestral origin which leads to some harassment and racism nowadays, even though the concept of slavery has been abolished. Racial discrimination still exists as a residue of slavery because the racists believe that the land is originally theirs therefore, in their claims, they deserve more rights.

Racism is not encouraged by the current government of USA. Racism is perpetrated by the people and the government has institutions in place to eliminate such acts. The government of USA shouldn’t be held responsible in form of reparations, for the unjust acts of some of its citizens. Just like the way the legacies of the unjustly murdered are upheld by compensating their families, the descendants of slaves should be paid reparations as compensation.
