VIDA KIT: NIGERIA’S OPPORTUNITY TO CHECK THE SPREAD OF COVID19 By Admin Posted on 6 days ago 6 min read 0 0 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin When Professor Tumininu Adebambo of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) was planning to return to Nigeria from Europe where he had gone on a sabbatical leave with his family, he got really worried about the COVID19 protocols that were put in place for arriving passengers. The protocols demand that every arriving passenger must undergo a mandatory Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test popularly referred to as COVID19 test by the seventh day of arrival. For this test, each arriving passenger is made to pay N50,950 and the test must be taken in one of the approved laboratories in Lagos or Abuja depending on where the passenger arrived through. Lagos laboratories for passengers that arrived through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos while passengers arriving through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja will take their test in any of the approved laboratories in Abuja. Luckily for him, he was able to pay the exorbitant test fee online despite the difficulties many people had experienced while trying to make online payments. Professor Adebambo chose one of the Lagos laboratories and he decided to opt for home-service. Home-Service PCR test is where the designated laboratory sends their staff to take sample from the client’s home. The result is then transmitted via email in 48 hours. On the appointed day of the home-service sample extraction, Prof. Adebambo’s wife (Mrs Damilola Adebambo) being a conscious person of who the family is exposed to; insisted that she has to be sure of the COVID19 status of the paramedic before being allowed into their home. Alas! The paramedic could not show any evidence of his COVID19 status and neither does he have any equipment than can do a PCR test right there and then. In his travels and research works, Professor Adebambo had partnered with StabVida Genetics Laboratory in Caparica, Portugal who made a pocket-size point of care COVID19 test device called “Dr Vida”. It is as small as a matchbox and gives result in just thirty minutes unlike the test conducted by laboratories approved by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) which takes forty-eight hours. Prof. Adebambo conducting a test on the laboratory official using Dr. Vida Test Kit Lo and behold, Prof. Adebambo tested the laboratory official who had come to take his sample and the result came out negative in just thirty minutes. Result of COVID19 Test carried out on the laboratory official using Dr. Vida Test Kit After the test result using the Dr. Vida test, the laboratory official now took Prof. Adebambo and his wife’s samples for testing for which the result is expected in two days! Laboratory Official takes sample for PCR Test from Prof. Adebambo The difference with the Dr. Vida test kit is that; according to the manufacturers “made to democratize COVID19 testing such that individuals, clinics, schools, offices etc can now do their routine tests as often as possible.” Dr. Vida Test Kit The results are received in thirty minutes on a mobile phone and also stored anonymously in the cloud. The cloud storage can be made available to central testing authorities such as the NCDC for harvesting. Dr. Vida uses the same real time PCR standard diagnostic test. With Dr. Vida, Nigeria can win the fight against the spread of COVID19 using very minimal but far more effective resources.
