DSS prevents Kanu from signing a letter requesting UK consular assistance — Lawyer
The Department of State Services has stopped detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, from signing a consular assistance form by the United Kingdom.
One of the counsels for the detained IPOB leader, Aloy Ejimakor, disclosed this in a statement on Monday after visiting Kanu in DSS custody.

Kanu, who was born on September 25, 1967, is a dual citizen of Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He was arraigned before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja for terrorism-related charges after his re-arrest and extradition from a foreign country, and he has since been remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services. He had skipped bail and fled to the United Kingdom.
The British government has stated its willingness to provide “consular assistance” to Kanu, but he must first consent to the assistance by signing some forms.

Dean Hurlock, Head of Communications at the British High Commission in Abuja, stated, “The British High Commission in Abuja is currently seeking clarification from the Nigerian government about the circumstances of the arrest.” In response to any questions about whether the British High Commission is assisting in this case, we can confirm that the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office is ready to provide consular assistance.”

Following that, Ejimakor delivered two forms to the IPOB leader last Wednesday during a visit to the secret police office.
However, according to a statement sent to our correspondent on Monday, the forms were returned to him unsigned.

The statement by Ejimakor was titled, ‘Summary of my visitation with our Client, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on Monday 19th July.’
“Last Saturday, when I visited Mazi Kanu, I expressed strong concerns about the excessive delay in having Kanu sign the two Forms I had taken to the DSS for Kanu’s signature some days before,” it said.
Both Forms confirm his agreement to consular and diplomatic interventions by the United Kingdom and its High Commission in Nigeria.
Surprisingly, the Forms were not signed and returned to me.

“Instead of providing any benefit, the refusal will contribute to the perception that the Nigerian government is deliberately isolating Kanu from consular and diplomatic access to the United Kingdom. It is inconsistent with the best traditions of fundamental fairness to deny a detainee access to resources that will aid him in his defense. This is one of the factors that will be considered as the situation unfolds.

“For these reasons, I am now compelled to call on the British High Commission in Nigeria to remove all red tape and use all of its diplomatic clout to gain immediate access to Kanu. This is especially important given Mazi Kanu’s prospects for improved welfare, including adequate medical care. Furthermore, the High Commission’s prompt intervention means that Kanu will have another layer of human contact in addition to his legal team, who are currently the only ones permitted to see him.”
