Newcastle United have confirmed the appointment of Eddie Howe as their new manager replacing Steve Bruce.

Howe was in the stands for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton, and the Premier League club announced on Monday afternoon that he had signed a deal to succeed Steve Bruce.

“It is a tremendous honour to be named head coach of a team of Newcastle United’s magnitude and history.  It’s a very proud day for my family and me,” Howe said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity, but there is a lot of work ahead of us, and I am looking forward to getting out on the training ground and working with the players.”

“Eddie has immensely impressed us throughout what has been a rigorous recruitment process,” Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley said.

“He is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas about pushing this team and club ahead, in addition to his obvious achievements at AFC Bournemouth, where he had a transformational impact.”

Following a failed attempt to get former Arsenal manager Unai Emery, Newcastle decided to hire Howe.

Emery had been the No. 1 priority for the Magpies’ new Saudi-backed government, but the Spaniard turned down their offer in favour of sticking with current club Villarreal.

They then moved fast to sign Howe, who was one of their last two contenders alongside Emery, with a deal completed on Friday and confirmed on Monday.

The 43-year-old has signed a contract that runs until 2024, and now has the international break to try and implement his ideas.

He takes over a Newcastle team that is still yet to win a league game this season, with 11 matches played, and sit in 19th place with just five points.
