Security forces have initiated a manhunt for detainees who escaped from the Kabba Medium Custodial Centre in Kogi State in the early hours of Monday, according to Minister of Interior Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

He expressed grief for the loss of a soldier and a police officer in the attacks, noting that two Correctional Centre workers remain missing.

The Minister said he had been briefed on the regrettable attack on the Centre by unidentified gunmen by the Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Haliru Nababa.

During the attack, he said, security officials on duty, which included 15 soldiers, 10 police officers, and ten armed guards from the NCoS, fought gallantly to repel the onslaught.

Two Correctional Service employees are still missing, according to a statement signed by Media Assistant to the Minister Sola Fasure, while one soldier and a policeman killed in the incident.

“At the time of the incident, the Kabba Custodial prison housed 294 inmates, many of whom fled when the attackers used explosives to damage three sides of the perimeter fence,” the statement adds.

“However, there are still 28 inmates who haven’t been released. As of this morning, several people had willingly returned to the facility.

“The Nigeria Correctional Service Controller General, Haliru Nababa, is currently monitoring the issue. There is also a tour of the facilities going on right now.

“A Crisis Response Center has been established, and a Special Taskforce has been deployed to recapture fugitive inmates, while an Inter-Agency Security Task Force is already on the lookout for the gunmen who assaulted the facility.

The public is urged to remain calm because the situation has been brought under control.

“The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, promises Nigerians that the assailants will be apprehended and brought to justice by Nigerian security forces. We will not leave any stone unturned in our efforts to reclaim them. We’ve also alerted INTERPOL with their information in case any of them tries to flee beyond our borders.

“We advise citizens to be watchful and report any weird or suspect persons or actions to the nearest law enforcement agency, particularly in the neighborhoods surrounding the detention facility.

“Escape from lawful custody is a serious criminal offense to the fleeing inmates. Law enforcement agencies and individuals have the legal authority to employ any and all methods necessary to apprehend you and bring you to justice.

“As a result, you should be aware of what you’re up against. If you voluntarily surrender yourself to the nearest law enforcement office, however, you will be entitled for mitigation.

“The Nigeria Correctional Service will not be intimidated by individuals wanting to jeopardize our country’s security; we will confront this crisis head on.”
