The Federal Government has condemned the Sudanese coup d’etat, which took place on Monday, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Sudan’s top general had declared a state of emergency, dissolved the country’s democratic transition leaders, and announced the establishment of a new government earlier on Monday.

Soldiers then detained citizens, which was criticized by the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Spokesperson, Esther Sunsuwa.

“The Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns the coup d’etat that occurred today in Sudan, in which the military dissolved the civilian component of the transitional government and arrested its leaders,” the statement stated.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs demands that the Prime Minister and all other political detainees be released immediately, as well as the reinstatement of the transitional government and the implementation of the agreed-upon path to return the country to constitutional democracy.”
