Google decided to buy a $1 billion building complex in central London on Friday, but underlined that it remained dedicated to new hybrid working practices in the aftermath of Covid.

The tech behemoth will pay 872 million euros for the Central St. Giles office building, where it is a tenant.

Google announced that it would revamp the site to allow flexible working patterns, including outdoor workplaces, for a multi-million pound investment.

In a statement, Google said, “This investment demonstrates Google’s continued faith in the office as a venue for in-person work and connection.”

As a result of the pandemic-related changes in employment, the company anticipates around a fifth of its personnel will continue working remotely.

“We’ve had the honor of operating in the UK for nearly two decades, and our purchase of the Central St Giles development underlines our sustained commitment to the country’s growth and success,” said Ruth Porat, Alphabet’s chief financial officer.

“Our focus will continue to be on providing flexible workspaces that promote innovation, creativity, and inclusion,” says the company.

The purchase is part of Google’s larger expansion in central London, where the company is also developing a huge complex.

In the UK, Google will eventually employ 10,000 people, up from the current 6,400.

Meanwhile, the British government applauded Google’s recent expansion as the country seeks to keep major corporations in the wake of Brexit.

“Google’s job investment is a strong vote of confidence in the UK as a global tech centre,” said finance minister Rishi Sunak.

“It also demonstrates that our country remains one of the most appealing areas in the world for top companies to expand their operations.”

It comes after Google announced plans to purchase a $2.1 billion office complex in New York City last year.
