SANWO-OLU SWEARS IN 57 COUNCIL CHAIRMEN (PHOTOS) By Admin Posted on July 27, 2021 4 min read 0 0 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin By Aishat Momoh. O. Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has stated that the administrative and financial autonomy enjoyed by Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state for nearly two decades is not granted for no reason, but to achieve a bottom-up growth model for the acceleration of coordinated development across the state. Local governments, being the level of government closest to the people, must justify their autonomy, according to the Governor, by enacting people-oriented policies and programs aimed at enhancing the lives and livelihoods of citizens at the local level. On Tuesday, Sanwo-Olu delivered the advise at the swearing-in of LGA and LCDA chairmen elected in the State’s council elections last Saturday. At a ceremony conducted at the State House in Alausa, the chairmen and vice chairmen were sworn in. All 57 local council chairmanships were won by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Sanwo-Olu said that the APC’s landslide victory at the polls had once again proved Lagosians’ faith in the party, encouraging council chairmen to protect and repay the people’s trust by prioritizing the welfare of their constituents in decision-making. Lagos, he claimed, had not created any void in local government management since the fourth republic began. The Governor exhorted the chairmen to use their power to work for the people rather than to use it to destroy their political opponents. He also reminded the council leaders that they had arrived at a difficult time, when the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had disrupted jobs, livelihoods, and businesses across the state, and that residents expected nothing less than good governance and policies to help their administrative areas navigate the difficult times and maintain a strong socioeconomic footing. He explained that this is one of their responsibilities and liabilities as elected officials, and he challenged them to live up to their expectations. He reminded them that their time as council administrators was limited, and he urged them to start establishing their legacies right away. The Governor lauded Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC’s National Leader, for his “unflinching dedication” to the party’s sustained triumph at all levels. Members of the APC Local Government Election Committee, led by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and party executive members, led by State Chairman Hon. Tunde Balogun, were also congratulated by Sanwo-Olu for carrying out the mandate handed to them. The Governor praised the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), led by Justice Ayotunde Philips (Rtd), for continuing to carry out its responsibilities and obligations as outlined in the statute that established it.
