Following a knee injury, Lionel Messi will return to the Paris Saint-Germain squad to face Manchester City on Tuesday, with Pep Guardiola admitting he “doesn’t know how to stop” their Champions League opponents.

Messi has been out of the last two games for PSG, but he returned to training on Monday.

Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of PSG, has refused to say whether the six-time Ballon d’Or winner will start versus City in a repeat of last season’s Champions League semi-final.

“He’s in a great place,” Pochettino remarked. “I believe he will be in the squad tomorrow, but I haven’t made up my mind about the starting XI yet.”

During a four-year span at Barcelona, Guardiola and Messi won 14 trophies together, including two Champions League titles.

Messi was linked with a reunion with Guardiola at City after Barcelona failed to renew his contract owing to financial fair play restrictions, but instead joined PSG on a free transfer.

“Everyone was surprised (when Messi left Barcelona), but that’s what happened,” Guardiola added. “It is now widely accepted.

“You couldn’t have imagined it a long time ago, yet it happened. You never know what will happen in life. I’m confident he’ll be happy in Paris.

“His career has been outstanding. Hopefully, he will be able to contribute to the game tomorrow.”
