Roberto Cammarelle, Joshua’s opponent in the 2012 Olympic boxing final, feels the crowd “affected the judges” and that he “can’t comprehend” how Anthony Joshua was granted victory over him.

At the London Olympics, Italy’s 2008 Olympic champion faced Joshua for the super-heavyweight gold medal, but was defeated by countback when the scores were equal at 18-18 after three rounds.

Cammarelle, who had stretched a 6-5 lead to 13-10 before the last round, questioned Joshua’s ability to narrow the gap.

“As far as I recall, I believe I fought very well throughout the two rounds,” he remarked.

“He didn’t fight to beat me in the last round. He was only trying to keep the fight under control. I’m baffled as to why I didn’t win while having the same number of points and a similar score.

“I believed I was handling the first-round lead I had gained and also fighting a third round that was enough to win the fight.”

At the World Championships in Azerbaijan a year earlier, Cammarelle also lost a close 15-13 decision against Joshua.

“Those were horrible memories,” Cammarelle recalled, “since I didn’t win a medal at the World Championships.”

“I also believe that in that situation, I was the one who truly won the fight. The judges were heavily swayed by the public,” Cammarelle remarked.

“I had the feeling at one point that the audience was cheering regardless of Joshua’s move, even if it was a miss, and I believe this affected the ultimate result.”
