By Adeniyi Onaara Ice Cube spoke with HNHH exclusively about his BIG3 basketball league and how he has been able to expand the business in such a competitive field. Ice Cube’s BIG3 basketball league had lofty goals back in 2020. Following its inception in 2017, the organization enjoyed three successful seasons, with each game drawing greater and larger crowds. The BIG3 was quickly establishing itself as the top destination for 3-on-3 professional basketball, with a product that set it apart from every other league in the world. In the midst of what would have been the final season, With its new Fireball3 rules package, the league was poised to modify the product even more, allowing coaches to challenge fouls and have a one-on-one confrontation called Bring The Heat instead of the typical free throw. Unfortunately, COVID-19 forced the league to halt operations for a year, prompting Ice Cube to devise new strategies to keep the BIG3 afloat. Cube, for example, was rumored to be executive producing a reality show in which all of the league’s members live in one large house and compete in tournaments for financial awards. Although it was an ambitious plan that never materialized, Cube still had high aspirations for 2021, which he was able to realize. One of Cube’s major objectives was to have the BIG3 perform in foreign markets, and 2021 provided the ideal time to do so, with worldwide travel becoming more accessible. Cube revealed early this season that the semifinals and championship game would be held at the Atlantis Paradise Island resort in Nassau, Bahamas, which provided plenty of incentive for the league’s players to go all out. The title game was contested on Saturday, September 4th, between the 3 Headed Monsters and the Trilogy. Thanks to Jarrett Jack’s heroics and Stephen Jackson’s guidance, it was the Trilogy who came out on top. We had the opportunity to speak with Ice Cube while we were there, and he told us about his passion for the game, the obstacles of creating a brand new league, and why the Bahamas was chosen as the host country for the BIG3’s fourth championship game.
