Shelby Rogers said she’s now going to have to deal with “nine million death threats” on her social media accounts from strangers who are unhappy with her loss following her disappointing US Open loss to Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu in straight sets.

Rogers stated she wishes “social media didn’t exist” when questioned about the spotlight she has been in since her big third-round triumph against world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty.

“Obviously, we like the attention in those moments,” she remarked at the post-match press conference. “But then you have today, and I’m going to get nine million death threats and things.  It’s really polarising, going from one extreme to the other swiftly.”

Rogers admitted that, while she dislikes social media, it is an important element of marketing at the moment, and she is required to share some information.

“You could definitely look at my profile right now and find out that I’m probably a ‘fat pig’ and other insults I can’t imagine right now,” Rogers remarked. “But, sadly, it is what it is. It’s the unfortunate side of any activity and what we do, and you try not to take it too seriously.”

She claimed she didn’t want to pay attention to comments made about her by people posting from their parents’ basements, but it “does get to your head sometimes.

“Although social media has no effect over what I do or how my training progresses, I wish it didn’t exist. It’s extremely difficult.

“After her third-round loss to Angelique Kerber, former US Open champion Sloane Stephens also opened up about receiving abusive and harassing messages on Instagram, calling it “exhausting and never-ending.”
