The multi-million dollar megachurch came under fire after it was revealed that it had received money for COVID-19 relief.

There have been numerous PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) Loan scandals in the previous year and a half. The government gave out hundreds of millions of dollars to assist businesses survive the pandemic, but when the public found out that Joel Osteen’s Texas megachurch was one of the recipients, they were outraged.

We previously reported that the government granted Osteen’s Lakewood Church, one of the largest in the country, a $4.4 million PPP Loan in COVID-19 Relief.

It irritated some people, especially since Osteen is said to be worth $100 million and lives in a 17,000 square foot mega-mansion.

Lakewood Church reportedly employed 368 part-time and full-time employees, and the $4.4 million was said to have been distributed to them during the quarantine. According to the Houston Chronicle, the church confirmed today (October 8) that they have been repaying the loan since January.

This loan, like many others temporarily closed by the pandemic, provided Lakewood Church with short-term financial support in 2020, guaranteeing that its approximately 350 employees and their families would continue to receive a paycheck and complete healing.

This issue has been exacerbated by discussions over church taxation, but that fight has been going on for decades.
