HEAT OF THE MOMENT LATEST GIST TOURISM JUST IN: AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS DOWN TOOLS; PASSENGERS STRANDED By Admin Posted on November 23, 2021 3 min read 0 0 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin By Adeola Abdullah Air Traffic Controllers across Nigerian airports have downed tools on Tuesday morning. Passengers who turned up early for their morning flights got a shocker of their lives as they have been made to wait endlessly in the airports without knowing when their scheduled flights will take off. A passenger who spoke to Hotjist.com lamented how he had been made to miss a very important appointment despite arriving at the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos. “We have boarded (the aircraft) since 6.30am for a 7 am flight to Port-Harcourt and we are still here at 8.50am. We don’t know what is happening. We hear the Air Traffic Controllers are releasing one flight every twenty minutes”. According to a statement released by NATCA Today, air traffic controllers will slow traffic flow and departure times for domestic flights at the four major airports in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano by 20 minutes. As part of the meeting’s resolutions, NATCA stated that the ATC system and its operations were indifferent to the wellbeing of ATCOs. According to them, the system’s managers neglected to make necessary improvements, resulting in “one death too many.” “All ATC units nationwide should conduct flow control beginning at 6 a.m. Nigerian time today, November 23rd, 2021,” they said. All departures should be staggered by 20 minutes. Exemptions apply to all foreign flights. “That all ATCOs should strive to remain on high alert, and that if this exercise needs to escalate beyond flow control, we are prepared to take additional steps.” That this exercise will last two days and will be carried out meticulously at the four major airports, with close coordination from nearby aerodromes, prior to any launch.” NATCA enlisted the help of its members to ensure that its message reached the right people.
