The Nigerian Airforce, officially admits that its Alphajet plane crashed in Zamfara State after an initial denial.

“On 18 July 2021, at approximately 12.45 pm, a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet aircraft, returning from a successful air interdiction mission between the boundaries of Zamfara and Kaduna States, came under intense enemy fire, which resulted in its crash in Zamfara State,” said Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, a spokesman for the Nigerian Air Force.

“Fortunately, the aircraft’s brave pilot, Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, was able to successfully evacuate from the plane. The pilot, who came under heavy ground fire from the bandits, used his survival skills to elude them and seek refuge in surrounding settlements until sunset.

Flight Lieutenant Dairo, eluded multiple bandits’ strongholds and made his way to a Nigerian Army Unit, where he was finally rescued, using the cover of darkness and his phone as guidance.

It’s worth noting that when the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, received word of the disaster, he ordered that all efforts be made to save the pilot.

“Despite the setback caused by yesterday’s crash, the NAF remains dedicated to carrying out Mr. President’s mission and other constitutionally mandated responsibilities. As it continues to carry out its assigned responsibilities, the NAF’s willingness, preparedness, and tested capability remain unshaken and unwavering.”
