SPORTS GIST Tennis NAOMI OSAKA BREAKS DOWN AFTER LOSS, SAYS SHE’S UNSURE ABOUT HER FUTURE IN TENNIS By Admin Posted on 3 weeks ago 2 min read 0 0 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Farouq Oduola A. Naomi Osaka broke down in tears after losing in the third round of the US Open on Friday night, saying she doesn’t know when she’ll play another competitive tennis match and will be taking an indefinite vacation from the sport. Osaka informed media after her 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-4 loss against Leylah Fernandez that the sport no longer brought her joy in a press conference. “I feel like lately, when I win, I don’t feel joyful,” Osaka explained. “It’s more of a relief to me. Then, when I lose, I’m devastated. That doesn’t seem reasonable to me.” The moderator attempted to interrupt the media session when Osaka, 23, began to cry, but she insisted on continuing. “Basically, I feel like I’m at this place where I’m trying to figure out what I want to do, and I honestly don’t know when my next tennis match is going to be,” Osaka explained. “I’m going to take a break from playing for a bit,” she says. The press conference was quickly ended after that. Osaka, the defending US Open champion and four-time major winner, struggled for much of the match at Arthur Ashe Stadium against the 18-year-old Fernandez, and her irritation was palpable. She banged her racket all over the court and even flung it at one point. She exited the court for a toilet break with her head draped in a towel after losing the second-set tiebreaker.
