O. Russia’s foreign ministry summoned the US ambassador in Moscow on Friday over US tech companies’ meddling in the country’s parliamentary elections, which are slated to take place later this month. Russia has recently tightened its grip on its internet segment, threatening international IT companies with legal action if they do not remove content that has been blocked by officials. “There is just one reason: electoral meddling in Russia. On Telegram, ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated, “We hope this is how American diplomats would report it to Washington.” Ambassador John Sullivan met with Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov on Friday, according to a separate statement from the ministry. In the run-up to the 2018 elections to the lower house State Duma, Sullivan was supplied with “irrefutable proof” of US tech firms breaking Russian regulations, according to the report. The ministry also stated that it communicated the “categorical inadmissibility of interfering non our countries’ domestic affairs.” Tensions between Moscow and Washington are high over a variety of issues, including allegations of election intervention in the United States and Russia’s human rights record. Russia designated the United States as a “unfriendly” country in May, prohibiting its embassy from employing Russian citizens.
