NPFL: AKWA UNITED STAY TOP AFTER DRAW AT RIVERS UNITED

It was another matchday in the Nigeria Professional Football League filled with suspense, drama and late goals which saw Akwa United’s lead at the top being reduced, and Enyimba keeping alive their dreams of getting hold of the title.

Akwa United have seen their lead at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) cut to three points after a 1-1 draw at Rivers United.
After a non-scoring first half, it was the visitors, Akwa United that took the lead when Charles Atshimene scored in the 53rd minute, capitalizing on a poor back pass from Rivers United defender, Fabian Nworie.

However, Ivorien Bamba Bakary scored in the 88th minute to rescue the points for Rivers United.

Nasarawa United returned to winning ways and are still second on the table after beating MFM FC 1-0 at the Lafia Township Stadium. Silas Nwankwo scored the lone goal in the 18th minute.

In Kaduna, Pillars maintained 3rd position, five points off Akwa United after a comprehensive 2-0 win over Dakkada FC.

Two first half goals from Rabiu Ali in the 38th minute and David Ebuka in the 40th minute ensured all three points for the Sai Maisu Gida.

Enyimba are on the hunt for a continental ticket after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Jigawa Golden Stars at the Enyimba Stadiun Aba. Jigawa took a shock early lead through Sunni Bature in 43rd minute but the People’s Elephant equalized through Reuben Bala in the 47th minute before a late header from substitute Tosin Omoleye secured the points for the record NPFL winners.

In Ozoro, Kwara United’s hopes of winning its first league title is all but over after losing 1-0 to Warri Wolves. A 48th minute strike from Sunday Williams secured all three points for Wolves.

The Seasiders are now three points from the first non-relegated team.
Heartland have ended its three match losing streak after a 2-1 win over Enugu Rangers in the Oriental Derby.

Youngster Chijioke Mbaoma scored his first senior goal for the Naze Millionaires in the 11th minute to give them the lead but Rangers equalized through Elijah Ani. Chijioke Akuneto would score in the 37th minute to win the match for Heartland.

In Katsina, it was an entertaining 1-1 draw between Katsina United and Lobi Stars. Samuel Tiza had given Lobi an early lead in the sixth minute but Katsina equalized through Rasheed Ahmed.

Plateau United are back to winning ways after a four match winless run with a 4-0  thrashing of FC IfeanyiUbah  at the New Jos Stadium. Jackson Daniel set the goals rolling in the 5th minute before second half goals from Oche Ochewochi (59th), Muhammad Zulkifilu (63rd), and Uche Onwuasoanya (83rd) completed the routing for the Jos based side. 

Elsewhere, Wikki Tourists beat Abia Warriors 2-1 while Adamawa United played out a goalless draw with Sunshine Stars.
