NPFL Match Report: We played better than Rivers, Pillars Coach insists after defeat

5 min read

Rivers United ended a disturbing run of four winless games with a fully deserved 2-0 win over league leaders, Kano Pillars and consequently end Pillars’ own ten-match unbeaten sequence on Wednesday.

The result did not fez Pillars coach, Ibrahim Musa Jugunu who was of the view that his side played better but must have to work on their conversion rate.

“We didn’t play badly but we need to improve in our goal scoring. If you check our two matches against Enyimba and Nasarawa United, we needed to score more goals that we created and it is the same thing today, argued the Coach.

He also attributed the outcome to the condition of the pitch which he said was aggravated by the rains.

“Another thing is about the pitch which is not good and the rainy season made it a problem”, Jugunu said still insisting that, “Notwithstanding , we played better, created space but missed the chances but Rivers got their chances and they took them. So, we need to go back to the drawing board and work on our lapses,” said Jugunu.

Rivers United left no one in doubt as to their intentions in the MatchDay 26 game decided at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt and duly went in front in the 11th minute through striker Sunday Adetunji who netted a brilliant striker’s goal. He controlled a flick to Enyinnaya Kazie’s long throw before applying a ferocious finish on the turn which sailed into the roof of the net.

After long periods of endeavour, the Pride of Rivers got an insurance goal four minutes after the break when Paul Acquah acrobatically hit home a rebound after Pillars goalkeeper Suraj Ayeleso had kept out Adetunji’s volley.

Pillars forward Nyima Nwagua was denied by the cross bar just before the hour mark but that was only as close as the Sai Masu Gida got to scoring in the encounter.

Pillars remain in top spot though with 48 points but only pending the result of Akwa United’s home game on Thursday while Rivers United are fourth on the log with 45 points.

Up next for Kano Pillars is a top of the table clash with Akwa United in Kaduna on Sunday.
