Lobi Stars held on to a first half goal from Ossy Martins to record a hard fought home win over Enugu Rangers on Wednesday in a MatchDay 26 encounter of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
At full time, a relieved Coach Kabiru Dogo told npfl.ng after that it was one of the toughest games for his side this season adding that the players were adjusting to how he want them to play.
Dogo, who had previously coached ABS FC and Sunshine Stars, wouldn’t want be drawn into projections for the title, saying that he only wished to take every game as they come to see where it will take them.
“I must confess to you that this is one of the toughest games we’ve played here this season, but we are happy it went our way.
“We knew they will want to frustrate us with their style of play but we took our chance earlier and I’m happy we held on to our match plans.
Asked about the club’s title chances, Dogo, reacted with, “You mean challenging for the title, (smiles) I don’t want to talk about that for now, though we are enjoying the moments now and the boys are gradually keying to how we want to approach games, but I prefer we take each games as they come,” he said.
Rangers were in Makurdi with the hope to atone for their dropped points against MFM last weekend while the hosts were looking to use the match to build on their Sunday’s away win at Dakkada.
It was Rangers who created what looked like a real attempt at goal in the 12th minute when Kelvin Itoya drew a smart save from Stanley Nwabali but the Lobi keeper was not really threatened.
Lobi also had their own chance two minutes after when a shot from Chinonso Okonkwo who benefitted from a team build up initiated by Lordson Ichull, was perfectly dealt with by Rangers keeper, Seidu Mutawakilu.
The home side had the trio of Ossy, Chinonso and Sani combining well to attack but Sani’s shot went off target.
What eventually became the only goal of the match came in after 22 minutes when Ossy Martins’ headed in a cross from Ebube Duru which left Seidu with no chance for a save.
The Coach Kabiru Dogo led side went close to double their lead before the end of half time when a shot from Carlos Geleya was parried down by Seidu. There were nobody in blue shirt to poke home the rebound until Ernest Governor cleared the mess for the Flying Antelopes.
It became more of midfield tussle between both sides to see out the remaining minutes of first half.
The resumption failed to produce much talking moments until 55th minute when Ossy thought he’s got his second goal of the match as he turned in Samuel Mathias delivery into the net. It didn’t count as he was already flagged offside before his final touch.
Lobi took control of most parts of the second stanza but could not make anything meaningful from their dominance.
The win has pushed Lobi Stars to seventh on the NPFL log with 40 points while Rangers have dropped to ninth.
Lobi will be guest to Abia Warriors on Sunday while Rangers host Sunshine Stars at the Cathedral on the same day.
