A former Broadcaster, producer and newscaster with the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, Fejiro Oliver has taken to the social media to shade the management of the media organisation over what he described as deliberate lack of creative practices and corrupt activities.

This coming after the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed said NTA needed $500 million to compete with CNN.

The minister has since received several backlashes over his statement.

Fejiro in this thought-provoking article, narrated his experience while working with the government-owned media house:

‘I worked with NTA as a producer on the defunct AM Express, 7pm newscaster and a weekly programme presenter.

In my few years there, frustration defined it. You are not allowed to be creative but to conform with their ancient norm. They call it ‘NTA In-house style’. Any attempt to be critical lands you a query.

I became rebellious to the status quo.

Against laid down rules of fresh staff not contesting for union position, I defied it and ran, with a well oiled campaign machinery and won two old staff to emerge as Chairman of the chapel.

I used the position to ‘oppress’ the management, refusing them to deal with staff unilaterally, without setting up a panel where I must nominate exco members to be part.

For my rebellion, I got over 50 queries which I always tear to pieces right in the building and thrashed them.

There was and still no motivation working with NTA. Brown envelope is king there.

Out of frustration, I joined the print media while still with NTA using a pseudonym. They found out and queried me after a year. I switched over to online media where I decided to express my journalism training and investigative skills. I was excelling there while still with NTA.

This was when I got hint of corruption in Niger State and decided to investigate the then governor. This period, I was in NTA training school, Jos. I got all documents needed and began to run a series about the Governor. It was mind blowing.

At last, I was abducted by a compromised SSS in Niger State by the very corrupt Director who got contract from Babangida Aliyu and I was also investigating. I petitioned him with evidences when I left prison and he, Larry Obiegwu was sacked by Buhari in 2015 for his unpatriotic involvement in the election and alleged corrupt practices.

I got suspended by NTA for working in two places against civil service rules. Who won’t work in one million places when there is nothing challenging to do in NTA. Archaic seniors, no talented GM and EDs, moribund equipment and poor salary.

Out of prison, I never returned to NTA and started my private media firm which remains one of life’s best decision as I would have died a poor wretched man working with NTA, cus I won’t be part of those defrauding the agency even I became the DG.

NTA needs no $500 million or even $50 million to excel. What they need is to sack all those old hands and recruit new blood that are creative and innovative, allow them free hands to run the organisation and pay them just the way CBN, FIRS and NNPC staff are paid.

If such money is released to them, they will share it and heavens won’t fall. It’s an agency that’s either rebranded with determination on given to private hands to manage for only five years.
