Olympics SPORTS GIST OLYMPIC COMMITTEE YET TO DECIDE FATE OF BOXING AND WEIGHTLIFTING FOR PARIS 2024 By Admin Posted on October 29, 2021 2 min read 0 0 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Pinterest Share on Linkedin Farouq Oduola A. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will decide as soon as possible whether boxing and weightlifting will be included in the Paris 2024 Games, according to IOC president Thomas Bach. “We are quite worried because there are issues of good governance in these two federations, which is why we are currently watching them very closely,” Bach told the French sports newspaper L’Equipe. “We will make a decision as soon as possible in the interest of the athletes.” Both sports have been struggling with governance problems and their participation in the next Summer Games is hanging in the balance. Last month, an independent investigation commissioned by boxing’s governing body AIBA revealed that a bout manipulation system existed at the 2016 Rio Olympics. “With regard to good governance, I believe we still need to witness a culture change in this international federation [the IWF],” Bach remarked earlier this year. In 2019 the IOC confirmed weightlifting had a conditional place at the 2024 Games providing it met certain conditions, however in February 2021 a fresh warning was issued to the IWF that it’s place in the Olympics was hanging by a thread. The IOC citied a failure to follow its previous advice about how to improve anti-doping efforts.
