Carnival procession The Carnival is a spectacular demonstration of the Ososo spirit and its ancient culture of loving hospitality and welcome. It’s also a bizarre representation of the Ososo culture of peace, community, and good neighborliness. The concept for the leisure event (Ososo Carnival) came to a group of young and innovative Ososo residents shortly after Season 8 of the Gulder Ultimate Search, a Nigerian reality television series created and sponsored by Nigerian brewers PLC, was held in Ososo in 2011. Since the first edition’s successful organization, the Ososo Carnival has grown into one of the most anticipated major events that residents of Ososo and surrounding areas, as well as those in the Diaspora, look forward to each year. Ososo Carnival also received the full support of the Edo State Government, owing to Ososo’s great tourism potential and Ososo Carnival’s ability to significantly contribute to the development of tourism in Nigeria. However, in Ososo there are other festivals that are very important. One of which is the Obikho Festival (Womanhood Tradition). OBIKHO FESTIVAL (WOMANHOOD TRADITION) This is one of the most cherished traditions of Ososo, just as every other Nigerian town has its own customs and traditions. In the Kingdom of Ososo, the Obikho Festival is very important and noteworthy. Initiation to Womanhood Obikho is simply referred to as the initiation of girls into womanhood, and it is normally performed once a year on females who have reached adulthood, during which the girl is held in the house for seven days without being involved in domestic house chores. This time period is also known as the holly period. Young girls demonstrate their virginity by strolling around town and even in market locations naked, attracting suitors. Initiation to Womanhood This, however, is entirely dependent on personal preferences. On the last day of the sanctification (holy period), the maiden, known as Obikho, is escorted in naked to a designated location where the final traditional rites are performed, signaling the end of the Obikho, which is performed only once in a lifetime and is mandatory for every female child in the town.
