American Tennis player, Sloane Stephens has lamented after receiving a torrent of racist and sexist abuse on social media after her US Open exit, saying the “hate is so exhausting and never ending”. In Friday’s third-round match, the 2017 champion was defeated by Angelique Kerber 5-7 6-2 6-3, and she was then bombarded with more than 2,000 offensive or angry comments, according to her estimations. “It’s really painful to read things like these,” the 28-year-old remarked in an Instagram post before showing some of the threats and abuse she received. “This kind of hatred is tiresome and never-ending,” she continued after presenting three screenshots. “This isn’t discussed nearly enough, but it really stinks… I’m grateful to have people on my side who believe in me. I prefer positive energy than negative energy. “I try to show you guys happiness on here, but life isn’t always smile and roses.” After the loss, Stephens, who has been ranked as high as third in the world, posted supportive words from her teammates, whom she referred to as “the only ones who matter.” Despite reaching the last 16 at Roland Garros and the third round at Wimbledon, Stephens was ranked 66th heading into this year’s season-ending grand slam at Flushing Meadows.
