According to austintexas.gov terrorism is the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government or its citizens to further certain political or social objectives.

Terrorism can be Domestic or International. Domestic terrorism occurs when it is been carried by the citizens or nationals of the country where it is been perpetrated such as Boko Haram in Nigeria while international terrorism is been perpetrated by foreigners. An example of such is when citizens of Chad carried out terror acts in Nigeria.

Even though, the acts of terrorism in Nigeria can be dated back to several years. The current waves of terrorism by the dreaded Boko Haram sect started in 2002 by Mohammed Yusuf. Boko Haram has killed and carried out several terrors including the bombing of United Nation building, kidnapping of school children and actively engaging in several warfare with the military.

Defeating Boko Haram

To defeat any terrorist organization, gathering intelligence is a key factor. Nigerian army must take intelligence very seriously. Winning the war is not only by buying weapons and tanks It is by knowing their mode of operations, their locations or base at all time, what drives them, sources of buying weapons, and sources of funding are information that the government of the day must have in their database at all time.

More importantly, the war must always be won psychologically. It is difficult to defeat people that are willing to die.

Government must then embark on campaigns that discourage more recruits. Engaging in systemic long-term re-education of the populace to have a long-term effect. In a war against terrorism, captured terrorists must be made to give vital information.

The government needs to work on eradicating poverty. Most of the people involved in terrorism are youths, the government must find a way to engage the youth.

Efforts must be made to provide employment. An idle hand, they say, is the devil’s workshop.

The army must work hard to fish out the bad eggs that give the terrorists information.

Lastly, the army personnel too must be trained in the modern way of fighting terrorism. Though the fight against terrorism is hard, it can be won and victory is assured. God bless Nigeria
