Emmanuel Korir of Kenya won the men’s 800 metres gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday, continuing Kenya’s dominance in an event that the East African nation has now won four times in a row.

Ferguson Rotich of Kenya won silver, and Patryk Dobek of Poland got bronze.

Due to David Rudisha’s recurring ailments, he was unable to defend his title, paving the way for a new champion to emerge, and Korir triumphed in 1:45.06.

He said, “I don’t know what to say, simply thanks to God. After failing to qualify for the final in both the 2017 and 2019 world championships, this is a major deal for me. Today, however, is my day.

“It has always been a dream of mine to be an Olympian, and today I am.”
