Abdulwahab Ibrahim and Abubakar Umar were sentenced to two years in prison each by a magistrate court in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Tuesday for being in possession of cannabis. Ibrahim, Abubakar, and Ibrahim Hamza were charged with public annoyance and being in possession of dried leaves thought to be Cannabis by the police. Mrs Punarimam Balogun, the Magistrate, punished Ibrahim and Abubakar after they pled guilty and begged the court for mercy. Balogun did not provide the two convicts the chance to pay a fine. She also ordered the two prisoners to pay N15,000 apiece for having dry leaves thought to be cannabis in their possession. The offenders were advised by the magistrate not to commit any more crimes. After Hamza pleaded not guilty to the charge, Balogun ordered him to be held in a correctional facility.The magistrate postponed the hearing until October 13th. Earlier, Prosecution Counsel Abdullahi Tanko informed the court that the complainant, ASP Salami John, and a team of officers from the Gwagwalada police Divisional Headquarter reported the case on September 6. The defendants were apprehended while officers were on patrol along Dobi road in Gwagwalada, Abuja, performing stop and searches, according to Tanko. They were on a motorcycle, he claimed, and dry leaves presumed to be Cannabis were found on them. They confessed to buying the Cannabis in Gwagwalada main market throughout the investigation, according to the prosecution counsel. According to Tanko, the offense was in violation of the Penal Code’s sections 183 and 319A.
