In the main event of UFC 263 on Sunday morning at a sold-out Gila River Arena, Adesanya removed all doubts as he demolished Marvin Vettori by unanimous decision 50-45 in a rematch of one of his hardest middleweight tests.

For his professional career, the 31-year-old improved to 21-1. (10-1 UFC). His only loss occurred in March at UFC 259, when he was defeated by division champion Jan Blachowicz by majority decision.

Since earning the unified championship against Robert Whittaker at UFC 243 in October 2019, his victory against Vettori marks the New Zealand-born Nigerian fighter’s third title defense.

According to UFC Stats, Adesanya landed 96 major blows to Vettori’s 58, proving who was the better fighter. Vettori got four takedowns, but they weren’t enough to concern Adesanya. Vettori’s only real danger was a rear naked choke, which Adesanya managed to avoid admirably.

Fellow UFC fighter Andre Fili reacted to the fight saying, “Izzy’s (Adesanya) distance management and range control is high level. And his defensive grappling looks like it’s leveled up”.

Adesanya won a split decision against Vettori on April 14, 2018, in a tough battle that was one of Adesanya’s most tough en route to the title. Vettori felt confident in his victory, which was the storyline heading into Saturday.

During his first 20 professional MMA fights, it was the first occasion Adesanya didn’t win via knockout or unanimous decision.

Vettori informed Adesanya in the Octagon at the end of the fight that he felt he had won, according to Adesanya and he stated in his post-fight interview telling Vettori, “You can keep thinking that.” “Whatever helps you get a good night’s sleep.”

Fau Vake, Adesanya’s late training partner and friend, died last month from injuries sustained in an alleged attack, and Adesanya dedicated the victory to him.
