The Plateau State administration and members of the Plateau State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities will meet on Monday to discuss how to end the three-week-long strike at the state-owned institution, it was learnt on Sunday.

Members of ASUU at the University met on Sunday to harmonise their positions in preparation for Monday’s meeting with the government team led by Sunday Hyat, the State Head of Service.

It should be remembered that when the state University’s chapter of ASUU declared the latest strike on December 20,2021, it accused the state government of refusing to follow an agreement reached with the union on March 2, 2021.

Apart from failing to address security concerns by deploying the armed Civil Defence Corps to the University, ASUU claimed that the Plateau government had also failed to locate a functional police outpost in the university host community, as well as its failure to settle national minimum wage arrears within the first quarter of 2021.

The government was also accused of failing to release N70 million as part of the first tranche of earned academic allowance arrears, according to the report.

According to ASUU, the second tranche of N72 million due in October 2021 had been long late as of last year’s conference in December.

It also accused the government of failing to pay mainstreamed earned academic allowances for the 2019/2020 academic year, among other things.

When called, Sunday Hyat, the Plateau State Head of Service, who is leading the government negotiation team for the planned meeting on Monday, was unavailable for comment, but an official of ASUU at the state-owned University confirmed the meeting on Sunday.

According to the ASUU official, the Union’s current strike action could have been averted if the government had stuck to the conditions of their prior discussions.

“The government has asked us for a meeting tomorrow (Monday) over the continuing strike by ASUU at Plateau State University,” the ASUU leader added. The State Head of Service convened the meeting, which will take place in his office. We convened our own meeting today in order to prepare for the Monday meeting (Sunday).

“The reality is, we don’t like the strike, but there’s nothing we can do about it.” We feel that the government’s planned meeting or renewal of negotiations with ASUU would have been unnecessary if the administration had done the right thing and implemented the previous agreement. We have decided to honor his invitation to see what can be done, even though the current Head of Service was not the one who led the government team during our previous agreement.

However, I can assure you that anything short of meeting the Union’s demands will not put an end to the ongoing strike.”
