Six people have been killed and 219 have been arrested in Johannesburg violence that erupted after South Africa’s former president, Jacob Zuma, was imprisoned.

Zuma started serving a 15-month term for contempt of court last Monday, which provoked the violence.

The 79-year-old had refused to testify before a state-backed investigation into charges of corruption during his presidency, which spanned 2009 to 2018.

On Monday, Zuma’s appeal against the sentence will be heard by the Constitutional Court, the country’s highest court.
